Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Even though public transportation around Georgetown is nonexistent, the bottom line is that you really don’t need it to survive at school. SU is fairly self-contained, so unless you need to make a Wal-Mart run, there are no pressing reasons to leave campus. If you’ve just got to get somewhere but can’t walk, you can always call a cab, or even ride a bike. When it comes to getting out of town entirely, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has got you covered. The airport was only opened a few years ago, and it looks more like a museum than a collection of terminals. Austin is also home to an Amtrak station and Greyhound station.

The lack of public transportation doesn’t bother most SU students, since most SU students are from Texas. Here in Texas, we don’t like subways or metros or whatever those Yankees call them, we prefer to drive around in trucks and SUVs. Also, if you don’t have a car, you will probably know someone who does, and since there is little else to do in Georgetown, they will probably be game to take you anywhere you need to go. Austin’s vastly underused Capital Metro Bus Line (nicknamed “Red, White, and Empty”) is a prime example of why SU students could care less if there were Georgetown buses. In short, Southwestern (in conjunction with resources in Austin) has all the transportation it needs.

No Car, No Way

Texas doesn't believe in public transportation, so if you don't have a car then you won't be going anywhere but the Georgetown Square. The school doesn't have any way of getting the students into Austin on the weekends, unlike many schools outside of major cities. This wouldn't be a problem if the campus wasn't so tiny. You'll be ready to get off of the campus grounds by Friday. It can seriously drive you crazy being locked up in this bubble.

Transportation

Transportation is almost not needed on our campus. It is so small that really the only on campus transportation are our PirateBikes.

Bad Transportation Infrastructure, but Not Necessary Anyways

I came from a city that had a very well-developed mass transportation system and it allowed pretty seamless integration of the nearby cities and made getting around very easy. Sadly, Georgetown and SU are not equipped with mass transportation of any kinds (not even cabbies or buses), but since SU pretty much has everything on campus, it is usually not necessary to have those kinds of things anyways. However, if you are an out-of-state or an an international student and you have no car, make sure to make friends with someone who does because you never know when you might have to go to Austin or Round Rock for something
