Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics is second to academics at Spelman, which some might argue is a good thing. However, there are many students who believe more emphasis and support should be given to sports programs. While there are teams and sporting events for the Jaguars, many students don’t have an interest in attending or don’t even know the schedule because of poor publicity. It appears that some students in leadership have put this on their radar screen and are not only seeking to help out in the varsity sport arena but are working toward launching IM sports on campus. It seems as if there are some ad hoc IM and club sports that go on through smaller groups. A couple that students will mention are a powder-puff football team and a walking club. Students at Spelman are required to take at least two physical education courses as well, which may lead to practice outside of the regular class time. Along with the sports marketing and fan attendance issues, the athletic facilities are not state-of-the-art. Many regular students and athletes are not happy with the gymnasium or the equipment to be found there. For the most part, even with the recent promotion to Division III, the school has a long way to go in the athletic department.

Athletics here are okay. The training and workout facility is open to the entire campus and it is great. I'm unsure what the division of sports is thatthe students here play, however the track team and tennis team are very good.

Go Spelman Jaguars!

I am a big supporter of the Spelman Jaguars and I am interested in playing softball next school year. My love for the teams is mainly caused by my love for Spelman College. Some of the teams get a lot of attention from alumnae but do not get as much support from the current students.

Most Popular Sports

Although sports overall do not receive a great deal of support from the student body, the most popular are basketball, tennis, and volleyball.

Most Overlooked Teams

None of Spelman's teams get much attention.

School Spirit

School spirit is high, primarily during special events like Homecoming, Founders Week, Freshman Week, or graduation. You will always see students wearing Spelman paraphernalia. During your first week freshman year, you learn school songs and cheers, but other than the Spelman Hymn, you will probably never sing them again. Dorm spirit among first-year students is high as well. Each dorm is like its own little sorority, complete with Greek letter names and dorm colors. Unfortunately, all of this school spirit does not carry over to the sports arena. Go to any Spelman Jaguar game, and you’ll find that the stands are far from full.

Getting Tickets

There generally are not a large number of spectators at the game. Finding tickets or a seat will not be difficult. Admission is generally free or a nominal charge.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The Oval, located in the middle of campus
