College Prowler Take

Spelman only offers two choices when it comes to dining. You can either go upstairs to the cafeteria or go downstairs for somewhat of a fast food experience. Many students agree that the food is just mediocre. The hours that you can eat are also rigid. You cannot find hot food on campus 24 hours a day. In fact, there is no such thing as a late dinner in the campus cafeteria either. Dinner ends at 6:30 p.m., and if you don’t get in by then, you can go downstairs and grab something to eat at the the Jaguar Underground (the “Grill”). The weekends are the worst. The downstairs option is not available on Saturday, so you are forced to eat in the cafeteria. Within the dorms, you will find that you can microwave meals and prepare quick items; however, you cannot have refrigerators or cooking devices inside your actual room. The good thing about the Spelman meal plan is that it is included in your tuition, and your ID card gives you access and is preloaded with $25 for the the Grill. After that, you have to stock up the card on your own. It seems like the highlights of the week for most students are fried fish Friday, fried chicken Wednesday, and the Spelman Sunday brunch. Other than that, students don’t have much to say about eating on campus. It is safe to say that perhaps this is not one of the strong points of the College.

The cafeteria is good. We finally got vegan and vegetarian accommodations. There are daily options like pizza, subs, waffles, and pasta, and there are special options occasionally, depending on events and holidays. It’s important to remember that it is a cafeteria, not a restaurant—then you won’t be disappointed.

Two days: fried chicken day (Wednesday) and fried fish friday! Those are the good days, as well as brunch on Sundays. The other days are a struggle. We only have two places where you can eat—the cafeteria or downstairs. The venue for downstairs always changes, and it’s more expensive. Also, both spots tend to close pretty early, so if you’re hungry past, like, 6:30, you’re out of luck. A lot of people tend to order out.

As far as the main dining hall, I never really ate there much, except for freshman year because I was forced to live on campus. The dining hall is okay, but the Grill is better. They serve hamburgers. More people eat there than in the actual cafeteria. They have wings, smoothies, and those types of things.

I personally think the dining hall is edible. The problem I have is the workers are stingy. It is supposed to be all you can eat, but none of it is self-serve. If you ask for extra, they tell you to come back. That bothers me. They have the salad bar, pasta, hot meals, sandwiches, and anything you could want. I think it is good that they cater to the vegetarian crowd. The thing with the Grill, so you don’t have to walk around with cash, is that you can add money to your ID. You start out with $25.

The food on campus leaves much to be desired. Breakfast is pretty good. They have a wide variety. Lunch is pretty consistent. You know you are guaranteed hot dogs and hamburgers Tuesday and Thursday. Dinner is horrible, and it is almost like they say ‘the faculty is gone now, so let’s just put something out here.’ The food is okay. The Grill is good, but it is a little overpriced and portions aren’t great. It’s fast food.

Did You Know?

At one time, students from other schools would sneak into the Spelman cafeteria to eat because it had the best food in the Atlanta University Center!

As of Fall 2008, Spelman now has two dining halls, the oldest being located in Upper Manley and the newest in the Spelman Suites.
