Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For first-year students at Spelman, living on campus is mandatory. The best dorm for you will depend on your personality. For example, if you prefer the luxuries of hotel living, elevators, atriums, computer labs, and courtyards, your best bet is LLCI. This dorm is the newest and nicest of the first-year dorms. It is also home to upperclasswomen, and certain rooms are reserved for honors program members or scholarship recipients. Another option is Howard Harreld Hall, mostly referred to as HH. The camaraderie in this dorm is evident, it being the largest freshman dorm. Abby Hall is probably located the furthest from the front gates of Spelman, and, like HH, it offers singles through quads. It is sure to be a memorable experience for anyone with more than one roommate! Manley is one of the dorms that people just don’t talk about much. By design, it is set up much like HH and is in proximity to the major buildings on campus. Only certain dorms (LLCI and LLCII) are air-conditioned, and the ones that are seem to have the smallest rooms. Most students believe it is a choice between being hot or being confined. Front doors are locked in each dorm late at night and visitation, specifically male guests, is only allowed during certain hours. Overall, living conditions on campus are decent. The dorms are very conducive to studying and provide a safe and quiet environment.

On Campus

The freshmen dorms do not have air conditioning. This is quite unfortunate, living in Atlanta in the summertime. Though with fans, it is not unbearable. the social atmosphere is pleasant, there is usually always something to do. The cost though is quite up there, about $40,000 a year.

Get Lucky

Though the lottery process is more favored toward upperclassmen, there is still a good chance that you'll get the room you want with a good number.

The Suites are the newest and cleanest. After that, LLC2. But there is a huge gap. Because all of the dorms except the suites are communal, the upkeep depends on your resident community
