Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At Spelman there is a computer lab or cluster in almost every academic building. The best thing is that students can print out papers for free. Crowded computer labs are an issue more during the day than at night. If you live on campus, you might have more luck after hours finding an available station. If the computer labs on Spelman’s campus are at capacity, the other Atlanta University Center schools have labs that are open to you. As with Spelman, students of the school where the lab resides have priority, but you will not be denied access if there is a station available. The general lab is open 24 hours, and all you need to get in is your student ID to swipe at the entrance. If you don’t want the hassle of waiting in a computer lab or you live off campus, you may want to bring a laptop or PC along. If you do bring your own computer and are not tech savvy, you will find that the student-staffed help desk will help you with any computer-related issues you may have. Spelman has come a long way in recent years with regard to computer facilities. Class registration, which used to be an all-day process of standing in line, is now a simple point-and-click process online. Instructors are making more use of online options as well. Liberal arts majors will probably find that the computer labs fit their needs, while techies may find the resources adequate but not overwhelmingly advanced in nature.

Labs Are Only Crowded During Crunch Times

Spelman college is a very small school with a number of computer labs. The labs seem to only be very crowded during finals and midterms. Most people do own their own laptops, including myself. Campus WiFi is not very strong in the residence halls but there is Ethernet connection available in each room. However, if you didn't own a laptop it would not be a huge issue. There are computer labs as well as a library where you are able to access computers.

Technology

The school is attempting to focus on STEM majors, because of that large donations have made it possible for Spelman to purchase new computers. The science center has three labs using both PCs and Macs. One large issue on campus is the outdated use of ethernet cords in dorms, rather then wireless connections. There were times during the semester, where the internet blacked out entirely across campus and was not restored until the next day. As students, it is ridiculous that we pay so much to have outdated technology.

Always a Place to Go

There are multiple computer labs available on campus and one lab that is opened 24 hours. Each computer lab is equipped with printers. There are also computer lounges in each residential hall. There is WiFi in the academic buildings and in the newest residential hall and it is very reliable. My suggestions for Spelman would be to put printers in the residential lounges and have WiFi across the entire campus.
