College Prowler Take
At Spelman there is a computer lab or cluster in almost every academic building. The best thing is that students can print out papers for free. Crowded computer labs are an issue more during the day than at night. If you live on campus, you might have more luck after hours finding an available station. If the computer labs on Spelman’s campus are at capacity, the other Atlanta University Center schools have labs that are open to you. As with Spelman, students of the school where the lab resides have priority, but you will not be denied access if there is a station available. The general lab is open 24 hours, and all you need to get in is your student ID to swipe at the entrance.
If you don’t want the hassle of waiting in a computer lab or you live off campus, you may want to bring a laptop or PC along. If you do bring your own computer and are not tech savvy, you will find that the student-staffed help desk will help you with any computer-related issues you may have. Spelman has come a long way in recent years with regard to computer facilities. Class registration, which used to be an all-day process of standing in line, is now a simple point-and-click process online. Instructors are making more use of online options as well. Liberal arts majors will probably find that the computer labs fit their needs, while techies may find the resources adequate but not overwhelmingly advanced in nature.

Yes bring your own computer. Macs are the easiest just because you don't have to worry about downloading all the extra stuff---just plug Ethernet in and go. There is Wi-Fi in all the academic buildings and one dorm. The computer labs are best for printing as I see it. They do become quite busy during exam time.

The labs are pretty crowded during the day, but I mostly use them at night, so I rarely have problems concerning that aspect. Our campus is almost completely wireless, so laptops are always a good option. We sometimes have problems with the network, though.

Computer labs can get crowded, especially in the Cosby building. However, there is a 24-hour lab in the Science Center, so a computer is accessible to students even at 3 a.m.

I would advise everyone who is able to bring their own computers to do so. Twenty-four hour computer labs are on campus, but they tend to get crowded around midterms and finals. Plus, realistically speaking, you won’t feel like walking to the computer lab at 2 a.m. when you finally decide to work on your paper or project. |

The general computer lab is...
The general computer lab is crowded depending on the time of day that you go and also depending on the time of the semester (e.g., when papers or research projects are due). If you chose to bring your own computer, then Spelman also has an MIS staff (including student interns) that are available to help you if you have personal computer problems. |
