Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are many elements to diversity, including ethnicity, age, economic status, sexuality, family structure, and major. At Spelman, there seems to be general agreement that, from a racial standpoint, there is not a great deal of visible diversity. However, many students tend to agree that defining diversity one dimensionally by race will not give you a clear picture of the distinct differences among the population. The women at Spelman believe there is diversity predominantly because all of the students have a different background, be that with respect to family, money, interests, politics, or experiences. There are no carbon copies amongst these women, and they are actually taught from day one to be individuals and stand up for themselves, as well as their beliefs. Spelman participates in exchange programs that bring students from other schools and other countries to the campus. In the Continuing Education Program, there are also students who attend Spelman who might be returning to school later in life, bringing with them the diversity of their age. From a state makeup, Spelman also has a good mix of people from the North, South, East, and West. The cultural norms in these regions of the United States are different and create a unique Spelman culture that is a fusion of distinct tastes in apparel, political views, music, hair styles, and so on.

Diversity at Spelman

Spelman is a historically black college, in Atlanta, near a few other historically black colleges and universities; so naturally there is a really big African American community. However, there is a lot of diversity in thought, economic backgrounds, political beliefs, religion, and sexual orientation.

Diversify Me

This is a Historically Black College but we have people of all different backgrounds. On the outside students may only seem one race but they are Latino and Italian all mixed in one. Lots of people think there aren't any caucasian students but there are several students here who enjoy learning about the African American culture just as the next African American. We also have a large amount of international students who come from Japan, Asia, West Indies, France, etc.

Facts

Gay Pride

The lesbian community at Spelman is supported, and organizations such as WORTH and FMLA strive to include all Spelman women into the campus communities, as well as the surrounding Atlanta University Center communities. In recent years, more students at Spelman have begun discussing the plight of the gay community, as well the high number of HIV/AIDS cases in the city of Atlanta.

Political Activity

Most students are politically and socially liberal. Ask any alumnae from the ‘60s, and they will talk about the campus-wide protests and demonstrations that were spearheaded by students. It has been years since a “student takeover,” and most campus issues are addressed through the Student Government Association. Most recently, Spelman students spoke out against the negative images of women in music videos. An invitation was extended to rap artist Nelly to come and discuss this issue, and he and his management team declined to attend. This led to some controversy in the media about Spelman not supporting Nelly’s non-profit initiative to raise awareness around bone marrow donations; however, the Spelman community held its ground, specifying that they merely wanted Nelly to participate in a dialogue to address their concerns dealing with the portrayal of women in music-related media.

Economic Status

Spelman has students from all socioeconomic backgrounds; however, there is the stereotype that all students who attend Spelman come from wealthy families. Eight-five percent of Spelman students receive some form of financial aid.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is popular, as well as Islam.

Minority Clubs on Campus

As a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) Spelman’s minority clubs are structured differently than at other institutions. There is a large percentage of students who come from other states, and for many years there have been state clubs so that students can meet others from the same general area. Some of the more prominent clubs are the California Club, the Tri-State Club, and the Texas Club. There is also a club for international students. There are also a number of religious groups on campus. These include Al Nissa, an organization for Muslim women, the AUC Baha’I Club, and Campus Crusade for Christ.
