College Prowler Take

Drugs, specifically hard drugs, do not have a visible presence on campus. It seems as if drug use is limited, or people are very discrete about it. Almost everyone has a story about the “girl who got caught with weed.” Maybe Public Safety just keeps telling the same story every year to keep people from thinking they can get away with bringing any contraband onto campus! Despite being a dry campus, it sounds like every now and again people may partake in a few alcoholic libations in the dorm room prior to going out to a party or a club. However, this still seems to be rather taboo on campus and is reserved more for off-campus gatherings. The drug scene outside of some who smoke marijuana or drink liquor and beer is seemingly nonexistent. Even those who have witnessed drug use at parties only mentioned those two types of activity. Most of the drinking amongst Spelman students takes place during key events, such as Greek Week, Senior Week, Homecoming, and graduation weekend. Homecoming is the only weekend when there is a major tailgate party with liquor flowing more readily because of the presence of Morehouse and Spelman alumni on the campus and surrounding property. Spelman seems to be a relatively drug-free campus with only certain students who participate in the heavy drug and alcohol scene.

I personally would say that it exists, but it’s not brought into the day to day. People do it, but no one talks about it.

Since I have been at Spelman I have only heard of one incident where there was a group of guys and girls smoking weed. I am sure there are students that engage in drug activity, but not as much on campus.

When you get to college, everyone drinks, and it is part of life. As far as excessive drinking goes, I don’t think it’s that bad.

I personally can’t say much about it. I haven’t seen anyone doing crack. At parties, I have seen people smoking weed, or at after-parties. I have experienced drug usage at other schools in the AUC.

Did You Know?

Alcohol is typically the only drug students bring onto campus, which is largely due to Spelman’s strict enforcement of its dry campus rules. If a student is caught intoxicated or with alcohol while on campus, they will be arrested on the scene.
