On the campus of a college that was founded over 100 years ago, you should expect some older, smaller buildings, but the facilities on Spelman’s campus are mixed when it comes to design and modern amenities. The Manley Student Center is home to the cafeteria and a social area, and most students find it a nice escape from the dormitory. Sisters Chapel recently had a much-needed facelift, and students and alumni are both pleased with the results. This facility has a great deal of history behind it and is home to most of the schools major presentations and entertainment events. Students complain most about the gym, as it is relatively small and offers limited equipment. Some students still find that they have to join the local Bally’s or LA Fitness in order to get the type of workout they need. Though Spelman’s campus doesn’t offer a great deal of variety when it comes to facilities and day-to-day activities, there are always events being put on that create a buzz on campus. Also, the proximity of the campus to other schools in the Atlanta University Center gives students the freedom to explore and enjoy facilities they like better elsewhere. Spelman is a work in progress, and students can expect that there will be more renovations to come to make the campus competitive with other schools.

Facilities

There is no library on campus however shuttles will take you there, so that is pretty convenient. The campus is very beautiful and open. We are gated in which sort of separates us from the other two campus that are right across the street.

Could Be Worse

Most of the facilities at Spelman are nice. The student center and cafeteria are well built and maintained. The campus itself is beautiful. The grass is always cut and the flowers are changed on the regular. The science center is new and has various computer labs that are always open. The dorms are a little bit older, and only one freshman dorm has air conditioning (this becomes a problem in the summer months).

Favorite Things To Do

Many students like to attend Market Friday, which is inside or directly in front of Lower Manley Student Center. It is a weekly event where vendors sell clothing, accessories, CDs, and general apparel. Major events occur on campus during homecoming, the beginning of the school year, and final exams.

Most students like to take a strut through Market Friday at the student center to buy bargain fashions, music, and accessories, or to catch up between classes. Homecoming, usually celebrated jointly between Morehouse and Spelman, is a well-awaited yearly event filled with fashion shows, coronation of the College queens, music concerts, and the infamous tailgate party in the adjoining student parking lots.

Did You Know?

The Spelman Suites, which opened in the fall of 2008, are the first apartment style living accommodations the college has ever had.
