Greek life is a clear and dynamic presence on Spelman’s campus, and they are responsible for a number of activities that promote sisterhood and community service. From forums on relationships to politics, they keep the campus engaged in all that is relevant to African American women. Spelman keeps a close watch on Greek activities and only allows women who have reached sophomore status to pledge. They also cap the number of students who can pledge in any given year. There are no Greek houses on campus, but many Greeks congregate at Market Fridays in the student center. You can spot them in their jackets or wearing the colors of their organizations. Many times, sorority and visiting fraternity members from Morehouse or Clark Atlanta University will engage in impromptu displays on campus. There are annual AUC step shows, and Spelman’s chapters have a history of competing and sometimes taking home top honors and bragging rights when it is all over.
The Greeks are known to throw the best parties and social events as well, especially during Homecoming. It is not unusual for alumnae to come back for Homecoming and ask “Where is the Delta party this year?” or “Did the AKAs win the step show?” All of the women at the school are united through their Spelman experiences and traditions.

I don’t think it dominates the scene. There are a lot of times you know they are present. At senior party, people were making their organization calls. You know they are there, but people aren’t upset about their presence. |

Greek life is dominant on Spelman’s campus, but you do not have to be Greek to have fun. I had friends who were Greek and friends who weren’t, and we both had equal fun during our college experience. |

I don’t think that Greek life dominates the social scene, but it is there, and it adds to campus life. |

There are many who participate in Greek life, but you can still have a life without it. |

It is very exclusive. Sometimes, it seems as if the Greeks as a whole are somewhat united. I think they socialize with other Greeks more than those who aren’t Greek, but maybe it just seems that way. By having Greek life, it adds more depth to the social life here. |
