Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The dating scene on Spelman and in the surrounding Atlanta University Center is always full of surprises. There are definitely a number of people looking to date or find serious relationships, and there is another group of both men and women looking to hook up for the short term. The schools in the AUC have a history that goes back pretty far, and there are some “old school” stereotypes that have survived the test of time through word of mouth. Most people who spread the stereotypes about Morehouse men, Spelman women, or CAU students probably don’t have friends outside of their own institution. Be careful not to fall prey to rumors and gossip. The consensus seems to be that guys and girls are nice, but anyone can be up to no good. Taking time to get to know someone is advised. Spelman, as well as the other schools in the AUC, advocate safe sex and provide students with information and contraception. It is probably safe to say that there isn’t a great deal of sexual activity between men and women on Spelman’s campus, due to the fact that men are not allowed to spend the night. Also, once you live off campus, you can pretty much see whoever you want whenever you want. Overall, though, there seems to be no short supply of attractive, eligible, and ambitious bachelors.

An ALL Girl School

There are a variety of girls here. We all have different backgrounds and are from various places around the globe. There are also so many looks, interests, dress and social life. Everything you could imagine and more, is here on one campus. But since our campus is located next to Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University, guys are on campus majority of the time and when visitation permits.

An All Female Institution

Spelman is an all female institution. However, Morehouse College, an all male institution, and Clark Atlanta University, a coed institution, are both conveniently located across the street from Spelman. The boys and girls from all three schools come from all over the country and have their own styles. There are cute boys and girls, and some not-so-cute boys and girls. It all depends on your preference.

Diversity Lies on the Inside

Though Spelman College is comprised of predominantly African American women, our diversity lies in our hometowns, our families and our heritage, and how we interact with others.

Throughout the three years I have been at Spelman, I have met women from all across the country and the largest thing they brought with them was the music. My music library is probably the craziest it has been.

Facts

Social Scene

Students are very social and involved on Spelman's campus. There is always something going on, and students, both men and women, from surrounding campuses will come over to check out the activities. The Student Government Association promotes the open-air vendor exposé known as Market Friday at the Student Center, and everyone is out and about on that day, especially the Greeks. Freshman year, students tend to make the friends that will stick with them throughout their time at Spelman. You can meet some upperclasswomen in some of your courses who will let you into their group of friends. The same thing is true with students who have the same majors, as you will find those who study together, socialize together. Joining clubs and staying active will help you to branch out.

Hookups or Relationships?

The Atlanta University Center is home to all sorts of relationships. Both hookups and relationships are prevalent, and it seems to really just depend on the individuals. There are some people who will meet their future spouse the first week at Spelman and others who will play the field and have a good time.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

The best places to meet guys or girls are definitely in front of Jazzman’s or on the Clark Atlanta University Promenade during the spring and summer. Also, events such as Beer Bash and Greek-sponsored pool parties and club events are great places to meet both guys and girls.

Dress Code

There is no dress code at Spelman. For the most part, it is a fashion show filled with different tastes. You'll have the ladies who wear sweatpants everyday and the ones who prefer to dress business casual. You'll find tank tops, skirts, and sandals in the summer. You'll have those who wear Afrocentric garb and others who design their own clothes. It is like a multicultural mall full of different styles on Spelman's campus.
