College Prowler Take
Spelman takes on-campus security very seriously. Spelman has set visitation hours in the dorms specifically for males. This decreases the likelihood of non-Spelman students wandering the grounds after hours. You have to have both a dorm key and a room key to get in after midnight. Violent crime on campus is next to nonexistent, and the most you might have to deal with in the dorms is someone taking your calculator out of the study hall.
At times, you will find yourself on the surrounding campuses of Morehouse, Morris Brown College, and Clark Atlanta University (CAU). All three of these schools have full-time security, but one thing to keep in mind when you are walking in the areas around campus is that Spelman security does not patrol these areas as often. You won’t find too many campuses safer than Spelman College. For many years, the entire college has been surrounded by an iron gate, and the school has front and back gate entrances, both of which are monitored by security at all times. The back gate is generally only open during school hours. The front gate is always open, but vehicle traffic is closely monitored. You cannot get on campus without being checked for credentials by an officer. Of course, it is a little easier for women to get on campus, as they will assume you are a student.

Spelman College’s security is...
Spelman College’s security is second to none. The security officers took a personal interest in making sure we had fun but safe experiences at college. They told us they would recognize us by face, learn our names, and become familiar with our patterns of leaving and coming onto campus. These things they did. While some students may have felt like security was too interested, they did make sure that we remained safe. |

The first thing you learn is the number to Public Safety: (404) 525-6401. It made you feel like if you were in trouble—even outside the gates—help is only a call away. |

No one can get through the gates. Basically, it’s very strict for guys. I have always felt safe on campus. From the moment we get there they tell us to never go anywhere alone. At the end of this year, there was crime going on in West End. Inside the gate we are taken care of, but outside the gates we are in a rough neighborhood. |

Spelman is guarded by the Spelman College Public Safety office. Security is tight, and Spelman is gated. Men can visit dorms and dorm rooms, but must be off campus by midnight. Spelman dorms lock after midnight, but Spelman women can come and go as they like. |
