Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • As off-the-wall as this might sound, bring a white dress. Spelman has a number of traditional ceremonies and activities which require that students wear white dresses. Tradition, even down to the outfit worn, is one of the major attractions of Spelman College.
  • Atlanta does get cold in the winter, so don’t underestimate the weather.
  • Bring a few suits for on-campus interviewing. Spelman has strong relationships with a number of Fortune 500 companies. You’ll have many opportunities to score an internship, but you want to be able to dress the part.
  • Remember, most of the dorms do not have air conditioning. You will want to bring a fan.
  • The library is not on campus and is not open 24 hours a day.
  • You will have a curfew during orientation week your first year at Spelman.
Tips to Succeed
  • Bring a computer if you can.
  • Don’t procrastinate on papers—remember, the computer lab is sometimes overrun during peak times.
  • Go to a Spelman summer program to get a jump on things freshman year.
  • Have a designated time to study and do homework.
  • Read before class. Teachers like to call on students during discussions.
  • Register early to get the good classes.
  • Take good notes in class.
  • Talk to students who’ve had the “hard” teachers before for tips, notes, and advice.

Sisterhood

Here at Spelman College, if there's one thing they push, it's sisterhood. Everyone here, teachers that are alum, seniors to first-years, and everyone in between--we're sisters. At first, it made me confused, but after homecoming, the "sister to sister" aspect of things made a lot of sense. I love it.

Sisterhood

My school teaches a unique course called ADW; African Diaspora and the World, which has taught me a lot about Black history that I had no idea about. Spelman grooms women to change the world and this desire to give back to the community is very evident. There is always a community service/get involved initiative taking place on campus. Again I can't emphasize enough how amazing it is to attend an all female school. The bond that you grow with your Spelman sisters help you throughout your college experience.

Facts

Traditions
  • Bench Ceremony: The Bench in this ceremony is located near the Alumnae Arch. The significance of the Bench is that it is only to be used by members of the current senior class. It is passed to the junior class on Class Day during graduation weekend. This ceremony dates back to 1941.
  • Freshman Traditions: Freshman Week is a tradition that stirs up the sisterhood of the incoming class, as well as the dorms. There are actually other traditions that first-year students will encounter, but to share them would diminish the special privilege of being a part of the Spelman family.
  • Ivy Oration: This is a speech given by the senior class valedictorian during Class Day, two days before graduation.
  • March Through the Arch: Spelman alumnae, wearing white dresses, lead the graduating class through the Alumnae Arch. This symbolizes their walk out of the gates of Spelman College and into the world.
  • Spelman Hymn: The Spelman Hymn was written by Eddye Mae Money Shivery a member of the class of 1934. It is sung at the conclusion of convocation and chapel events, as well as all alumnae events and chapter meetings.
  • The White Dress Tradition: One of the most well-known traditions involves a white dress and “flesh tone” stockings. This is sometimes referred to the “Spelman uniform” by students. Almost 100 years ago, there was an unwritten rule that Spelman students should have a “respectable and conservative” white dress. Students were also requested to own a pair of “sensible black shoes.” In those days, this outfit promoted uniformity and signified the importance of most formal events. To this day, during special occasions, Spelman students and alumnae are requested to wear this outfit. During the new student induction ceremony, the Founders Day ceremony, and graduation, to name a few, you will see hundreds of women wearing white.
Urban Legends
  • Chadwick Hall, an old dorm that was demolished, was sinking into the ground and had become unsafe to live in.
  • If you walk through the Alumnae Arch before your Class Day you won’t graduate. (However, good luck finding anyone who will admit to walking through it prematurely!)
  • Only women have held the role of College president at Spelman.
  • Oprah only gives money to Morehouse.
  • Spelman banned rap star Nelly from campus.
