| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
The Office of Career Placement and Development is a good option for finding summer internships and jobs after graduation, but don’t limit yourself to this resource. Most students will say that networking plays a big part in getting the best opportunities. Also, career fairs are big in the AUC. The AUC sponsors one career fair every year that has a reputation for attracting Fortune 500 companies looking to hire Spelman students. Many times, companies send Spelman alumnae to schools in order to get recruits. Make sure you stay abreast of the companies paying the career center a visit. You might also want to check out information sessions being held at surrounding schools. You might be able to make a good contact that can get you in the door. Sign up early for interviews, as the best companies get booked fast. Once you are in for an interview, don’t mess up your chances by showing up late or canceling at the last minute. Not only will you burn the bridge with the company, but unless it was an emergency, the career center may prohibit you from signing up for additional interviews. Keep your eyes open for Spelman alumnae that work for companies that you are interested in. The sisterly support is there both inside and outside of the gates, and chances are, if a company is already pleased with the alumni of a particular school, they will be interested in hiring more.
