Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Living off campus is an excellent option for students after their first year. Spelman cannot guarantee housing for upperclasswomen, so it helps when a certain percentage take the plunge and move off the grounds. As with restaurants, there are living accommodations in Atlanta to fit all tastes. There are loft-style apartments for one, two, and three people, two-bedroom townhouses, homes for rent, and boarding houses within walking distance of the school or a short drive away. Many students believe that living off campus saves money, though this can be debated. Some students live in posh downtown apartments, and when you add rent, utilities, gas, entertainment, and dining, you might find you are spending more. There is something to be said, however, for the freedom and responsibility you gain once off campus. Start your search early, as some of the more popular apartment complexes may have a waiting list. You have to make an extra effort once you are off campus to stay plugged in to the day-to-day activities, since, if you only have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the connection you have as a Spelmanite may start to fade. On the positive side, this will give you a chance to explore all that Atlanta has to offer. Balance is the key to a healthy and productive living situation while at Spelman. If you can achieve that off campus, then you should go for it.

Off-Campus Housing

The off-campus housing really depends on which ones you choose. if you were to reside in the apartments close to the school called college town, they are not in the best neighborhood and they are somewhat small.

Spelman Off-Campus Housing

From what I have been told many students move off campus because it is cheaper. As only a Freshman, I do not know much about off campus living. It will be an option in the future.

Unsafe

The area around the housing for students is extremely unsafe. There are non college students living there from low income families making the area not the best place to live for a college student.
