Approximate Parking Permit CostGetting a Parking Permit
In order to keep your vehicle in the Spelman parking deck you must obtain a permit. There are only 180 spaces in the parking deck available to upperclasswomen. Permits are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and payment is necessary in advance. Commuter students can use the deck for a daily fee with no in and out privileges. In addition, many Spelman students purchase parking passes at Morehouse College due to the lower costs.
College Prowler Take
If you could get a dollar for every student who has something negative to say about the parking situation at Spelman, you’d be a rich person. It is like finding a needle in a haystack to even find someone who doesn’t use the word awful, horrible, or expensive when they describe the parking options they have on a day-to-day basis. Those who live off campus don’t see the benefit of the yearly pass, especially if they only have classes on certain days, but the three-dollar charges add up, and the parking deck and lots are often full. There is parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, but there is a crime risk with that, and you have to get up at the crack of dawn to get a prime location.
Parking at the other schools and the associated prices may be driving the anger of some of the students. Morehouse and Clark Atlanta University are charging less to park. Some students complain that until recently they had the option to park at Morehouse, but because so many Spelman students were going over there, they had to discontinue it. The parking deck and surrounding lots on the Spelman campus appear to be under the control of a separate company, so it is unclear whether the institution can do anything about it. The bottom line is Spelman students find parking to be one of the least positive experiences at the college.

It’s easy to park if you sign a contract. Daily parking can be a pain. |

If you’re on campus, parking is on the pricier side compared to other schools, but you’re guaranteed a spot. Parking outside of the parking deck on campus is risky because you run the risk of getting violation stickers then being towed. If you live off campus, parking becomes an art form that you must master! First off, you have a commuter parking decal, which makes it tougher for you to get on campus at times. Secondly, you need to come early and hope the deck or the lots outside of Spelman aren’t full. If those are full, you then have to drive around the AUC and try and find street parking or park at Morehouse’s parking deck. |

There is mostly pay parking at Spelman. There is no parking within the gates, but since the campus is somewhat small, that’s okay. There is a deck for students and teachers, and a swipe card for parking can be purchased through the school. There are also pay parking lots in front of the school and in other schools’ lots. There is some street parking, but that usually fills up quick with commuters who have early morning classes and have to stay on campus all day. |

Parking is awful. First of all, it costs too much. When you tell people from other schools what you pay, they are floored. There isn’t adequate parking. That is something that needs to be improved. |

Did You Know?Best Places to Find a Parking Spot: The parking lots outside Spelman’s gates, but you have to pay here. The parking deck also usually has slots open, but it has been known to fill to capacity. Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here: Any of the streets within walking distance of the school. Best bet is if you have an early morning class, you may find an open slot. People from big cities are used to parallel parking, but non-city folk struggle with the tight spaces. You’ll learn how to get that SUV into a curbside spot quickly after being late for a couple of classes. Once you get street parking and can parallel park with your eyes closed, your luck might change, as many of the street parking areas are prone to vandalism.
