Honestly, I don't frequent Read Hall, Spelman's athletic facility, although it does host free workout classes. Manley, Spelman's student center, is where student organizations host a majority of activities. The Manley Center is nice. Sometimes students study or have meetings in Upper Manley. Manley also has a commuter lounge, as well. The library is on CAU's campus, and it's out of the way. I often study at Douglass, Morehouse's 24-hour studying facility.

Atlanta is a wonderful city. I was born and raised in Georgia, but it was not until I attended Spelman that I learned all that the city has to offer. The city is also undergoing major development, and there are a lot of new places to visit or shop, and there are some incredible restaurants. Atlanta is definitely a food city!

Atlanta is full of stuff to do, and if you're low on funds, there are a lot of free events---you just have to look out for them. There are a lot of different school around the closest to Spelman are Morehouse, Clark, Morris Brown, & Morehouse School of Medicine. We do a lot with the first two because we are part of the AUC.

Yes bring your own computer. Macs are the easiest just because you don't have to worry about downloading all the extra stuff---just plug Ethernet in and go. There is Wi-Fi in all the academic buildings and one dorm. The computer labs are best for printing as I see it. They do become quite busy during exam time.

The labs are pretty crowded during the day, but I mostly use them at night, so I rarely have problems concerning that aspect. Our campus is almost completely wireless, so laptops are always a good option. We sometimes have problems with the network, though.

Spelman is an all-female institution, but don't worry. Morehouse, an all-male college, is right next door, and Clark Atlanta University is around the corner. Together, along with Morehouse School of Medicine and ITC, they make up the Atlanta University Center (AUC). There is always something to do. As a freshman, you should never be bored.

Computer labs can get crowded, especially in the Cosby building. However, there is a 24-hour lab in the Science Center, so a computer is accessible to students even at 3 a.m.

The atmosphere in Atlanta is like a Southern city. There are lot of museums, concerts, shopping centers, and restaurants here. There are other universities nearby like Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Morris Brown, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and many others since Atlanta is a college town. It is easier to interact with students within the Atlanta University Center.

Overall, the Spelman experience, which included academics as well as extracurricular activities, helped prepare me to face the challenges of the real world. Oftentimes, it had me juggling far more projects than the average person could manage. |

I don’t think that Greek life dominates the social scene, but it is there, and it adds to campus life. |

Greek life is dominant on Spelman’s campus, but you do not have to be Greek to have fun. I had friends who were Greek and friends who weren’t, and we both had equal fun during our college experience. |

I don’t think it dominates the scene. There are a lot of times you know they are present. At senior party, people were making their organization calls. You know they are there, but people aren’t upset about their presence. |

Parking is awful. First of all, it costs too much. When you tell people from other schools what you pay, they are floored. There isn’t adequate parking. That is something that needs to be improved. |

There is mostly pay parking at Spelman. There is no parking within the gates, but since the campus is somewhat small, that’s okay. There is a deck for students and teachers, and a swipe card for parking can be purchased through the school. There are also pay parking lots in front of the school and in other schools’ lots. There is some street parking, but that usually fills up quick with commuters who have early morning classes and have to stay on campus all day. |

If you’re on campus, parking is on the pricier side compared to other schools, but you’re guaranteed a spot. Parking outside of the parking deck on campus is risky because you run the risk of getting violation stickers then being towed. If you live off campus, parking becomes an art form that you must master! First off, you have a commuter parking decal, which makes it tougher for you to get on campus at times. Secondly, you need to come early and hope the deck or the lots outside of Spelman aren’t full. If those are full, you then have to drive around the AUC and try and find street parking or park at Morehouse’s parking deck. |

Most freshman stick to taking the MARTA. It’s not as advanced as the subways in NY or Boston, but it gets you to the places most people go in Atlanta. |

Atlanta has four complete seasons....
Atlanta has four complete seasons. The summer is hot (thus the nickname HotLanta) and can be brutal in the un-air-conditioned dorms. The normal summer wear is a tank top and shorts. Autumn in Atlanta is funny; it can be really warm or kind of chilly, so it’s good to not put your summer clothes up too early and not have your jackets too far away. Winter is mild, and if it snows, it’s usually only like an inch or two. It gets cold like other Southern states, but it does not have winter-like weather as long or as severely as more northern states. The spring is perfect—warm days and cool nights. |

Spelman is hands down the best...
Spelman is hands down the best place for any woman, but especially women of color. Spelman does an excellent job of molding strong women and fostering esteem. Being a woman of color is celebrated, discussed, and analyzed in a way that isn’t done in our society. It was at Spelman that I had my first black woman instructor; which is common here. I cannot even put into words how important it is for black women to be in an environment where the faculty and administration consists of black women, many of whom are Spelmanites themselves. I evolved so much through my matriculation at Spelman; especially in my confidence. I am so proud of the woman I am today, and I owe a lot of that to my experience at Spelman. I always said that if I have daughters they can go to any college they wish, but the one school I’m paying for is Spelman! |

Overall, the teachers are great! They’re enthusiastic about teaching, dedicated to academic advancement, and committed to their subject matter. Teachers are very concerned about developing the ‘whole woman.’ |
