Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public transportation in Atlanta is fairly easy to navigate, and it will be your best friend freshman year. From Spelman you can take a 15-minute walk up to the West End Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) station. MARTA is Atlanta’s train system which runs on north-south and east-west rails. It’s affordable, and you can get to just about anywhere around downtown Atlanta. A round trip will not cost more than five dollars. In addition, MARTA offers a UPass for college students that provides unlimited access to the train for a low monthly fee. There are numerous bus stops along major streets, and you can catch the bus from the train station itself, too. Don’t expect anything like the transportation in larger cities such as New York or Boston, though. For out-of-town students, the MARTA rolls right into the airport, literally. You get off your plane, go to baggage claim, and take a short ride on the train. Spelman offers a free shuttle service to and from the West End MARTA station as well. Taxis are not as hard to come by in the city as they used to be, but if you do happen to have upperclassman friends, make sure to keep their numbers with you in the case that you are stranded and looking at a $50 cab fare. Overall, public transportation is convenient and reliable, but after freshman year, many students just get cars.

Meet Your Friend Ms. Marta

Public transportation is not the best at Spelman, but it is also not the worst. Spelman offers a shuttle that runs from campus to the campus library and to the MARTA station. The MARTA is a local train station that can take you anywhere from the local malls to various restaurants and businesses. It is very convenient and if you get a riding pass, it is relatively inexpensive.
