Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics are a big thing on campus, but it is not fair that many of the sport teams are overshadowed by the popularity of the basketball and soccer team. Some programs at St. John’s University have even been cut (football and track and field). There are also a wide variety of interest club sports and intramurals for those that enjoy the recreation but don’t want the competition and travel. The University works hard to provide all students with opportunities to exercise and partake in recreational activities.

On the national level, the Red Storm is a well-respected program. The Big East is quickly becoming one of the most feared conferences in NCAA basketball. At SJU, students get to see their team take on such heavy-hitters as Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and UConn. Athletics are known to draw many students to St. John’s, and with good reason. The University has assembled a top-notch program for its students.

Getting Better

When I was a freshman people were not really into being hardcore fans. As my time there ended people started getting more involved. The reason being is that the quality of the sports started to increase.

Red Storm Basketball

St. John's sports are pretty important to the university and the student body. It's really fun to go to games and see people get dressed up and freak out over basketball. Also, we get really great prices for student tickets, and its awesome to sit on the floor for a Duke vs. St. John's game. We play a lot of big name teams, so if you're into basketball in general, its great. We're division 1 in many, many other sports too. Our men's soccer team is killing it.

Important

It's almost as though people who aren't from StJ have more to say about the sports teams than those who go to StJ. The sports are important but if you are in the school and know these kids personally they are nothing that you want to be associated with. School spirit is high though.

School Spirit

School spirit is really big towards the basketball and soccer team, but it’s not that big on Greek life and other events. One good thing is that when there is any event, whether it is just an organization holding a picnic to Solidarity Day, there is always a crowd supporting and serving as spectators. There could be more student engagement, but the school overall has sufficient school spirit.

Getting Tickets

Tickets can be purchased from the campus concierge found in St. Agustin Hall or at the games themselves.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Walking around the campus is the best place to walk. If you prefer to be indoors, Taffner field house has courts that students can walk around.

Did You Know?

Red Storm athletes volunteer service to school kids. When not playing hard on the field or court, many of them assist as tutors in elementary classrooms throughout the tri-state. Kid’s College is a software program that uses sports to reinforce language and math skills. The game gets cooler as players get smarter. Right answers add up to access new plays, more players, and bigger stadiums.
