Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus security tries to maintain a happy medium between protecting the students of St. John’s and not invading their privacy. Sometimes they succeed, other times they fail. Some students complain that they are not being kept safe on campus, while others say campus security is constantly snooping in on their private moments. It’s certainly hard to keep things balanced on an urban campus. Students at SJU have to take some of the responsibility of following the rules and working to keep themselves safe.

One of the worst things a student can do is cheat in any of their classes—St. John’s will take the necessary measures to make sure the student is reprimanded, which usually ends in expulsion. Also, RAs are situated in the buildings to keep the order. Even though most are doing what is needed, some hold the attitude of that if they don’t see it, it’s not their problem. The front desks are staffed 24 hours a day to monitor who is in the buildings. Most of the front-end personnel of the dorm buildings are students themselves, so they tend to be more lax and not check IDs. This is a serious problem because it is putting the students’ safety at risk, and safety is the one thing that should never be compromised on a college campus.

Ready for AA Meetings?

I've seen plenty of people drink or smoke in the dorms and not get caught, but I've also seen the harsh punishments that they face when they do get caught. I'm not a drinker or smoker so I don't care about that stuff, but it's definitely a gamble so you have to ask yourself: if I drink in my dorm, am I prepared to attend mandatory alcohol abuse seminars all semester? I don't think so. Plus, Manhattan is bus ride away--go there and drink all you want!

Campus Strictness

The security is generally very good. Storm card needed to enter buildings is good. The resident life is a bit too strict with sign in rules and overnight regulations.
