Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

St. John’s University prides itself on furthering education through the enhancement of technology. The Information Technology department manages these upgrades by providing information, computing, and networks services to the entire campus and surrounding community. St John’s states their commitment to making a strong incorporation of technology in teaching, learning, and research is best exemplified by their laptop program, but ironically, it is only available to incoming freshmen and transfer students. Even some of the freshmen complain that the laptop program is not all it is cracked up to be. Some students opt out of the program all together and buy their own computers.

Even though the computers at St. John’s can be very helpful tools, they run incredibly slow at times. It gets bothersome because more chances than not, the computers or the printers are not working, which makes finishing coursework sometimes difficult. With the sizeable amount of money students pump into tuition, they expect the computers to be up-to-date and running efficiently. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. A student’s best choice is to invest in a laptop, if he or she can afford it. The freedom from worrying about such things as backed up lines, computers not working, and having to feel crammed, is truly priceless.

Getting Worse

Every student receives a laptop their freshman year, but the network reliability has decreased. Ever since they introduced their new wifi, the regular network has slowed and even disappeared in some areas in school. The speed is relatively decent but can be slower in the computer labs.

Safe & Secure in Staten Island

St. John's University- Staten Island is just a half-hour free transit trip away from Manhattan, NY. The island itself contains cultural centers and plenty of cheap outlets to shop at if you don't have the money to spend in the Big Apple. The students are well respected by anyone on Staten Island, but also in Manhattan you will find people asking you about your St. John's attire. There are comfortable sports teams and the school really provides their students with plenty to do, both on and off campus. From rock climbing and laser tag to the movies and Black Friday shopping trips, St. John's Staten Island provides a fun and comfortable atmosphere with a prestigious education.

The level of high-tech access St. John’s provides has earned a top 10 ranking in Intel’s Top 10, and inclusion in the Computerworld Honors Program. When you enroll as a full-time freshman at St. John’s University, you get a wireless laptop computer for your entire St. John’s career. Also, as of recently, all new transfer students will receive a laptop as well.

The labs are generally packed, and many students have to wait to get a computer from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Since all the classrooms are equipped with computers, many students go into an empty classroom to access a computer.

There are many links around the school that allow the student to access the Internet via their laptop.

There is a computer lab in Marillac Hall dedicated to finance students and is known as the Financial Information Lab.
