Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
St. John’s diverse population of students are drawn to the campus from across the United States and around the world. More than 18,000 students are enrolled at the five campuses, with 14,229 of them being undergraduates, representing 38 states and 148 foreign countries. Less than half of St. John’s student body is white. One of the best things about St. John’s is its diversity; St. John’s has one of the most diverse student populations in the country and supports a wide variety of student groups and organizations that caters to all race, religions, and interests. There has been some negative reaction to this, however. Because of the increased diversity, many students accuse the University of placing more weight on race and ethnicity than grades. Whether or not that claim has any basis on truth, the city of New York is in and of itself a gigantic melting pot where all cultures have an opportunity to learn from each other. Diversity is inescapable on and off campus, and students are learning to not only deal with one another, but to appreciate each other’s cultures (some are learning faster than others).

St. John’s does have a mixture of different people, but Caucasians still outnumber the minorities considerably. I notice it a lot in my classes; sometimes, I am the only African American student in there. |

Diversity is really good; you see many faces. It doesn’t stop the racism that goes on in our school, though. It’s ironic that people who should be openminded through interacting with other cultures, are still ignorant. |

It is very diverse, but people tend to stick with their own kind. It shouldn’t be like that, though, because you are really not expanding your mind to embrace someone else of another background. |
