Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The facilities at St. John’s are, for the most part, very nice. Carnesecca Arena and the St. Agustin Library have both been renovated. They are up-to-date and incredibly nice. Also notable is Taffner Field House, a state-of-the-art recreation gym for both athletes and regular students. The classrooms and other facilities at St. John’s are all in great shape, with the exception of Marillac Hall. Marillac is in desperate need of renovations, but no plans are in place to do so. The University Center (UC), a fall 2009 addition, houses organizations, a coffeehouse, a bowling alley, and many other things.

St. John’s is investing heavily in updating and adding new facilities to the campus. While some of the older buildings show some wear and tear, most agree that the facilities around campus are adequate. The school does a good job of trying to provide new additions, as well. St. John’s is certainly trying its best to provide proper facilities to its students.

St. John's Queen's Campus

For students at St. John's University, there is never a boring moment. When I'm not in class or studying with a Starbucks cappuccino in the new D' Angelo student center, I usually am at the fitness center taking one of the many diverse and free fitness classes. There is always a fun event to attend sponsored by student life or a seminar to take. St. John's has amazing division one sports teams including the mens soccer team who hold the title of Big East champs and the mens basketball team who own the court not only in St. John's own Carnesecca Arena but in Madison Square Garden as well.

The Athletic Center

The athletic center contains a gym and a basketball court. The basketball court is a great way to pass time between classes. The gym, however, is usually filled with school athletes. Although it is a nice gym, it is always occupied by one of the many sport teams at St. John's. Whenever you go, be prepared to feel out of place.

Cafeteria

One can't help but noticing how dirty and gross the cafeteria is. It failed it's health inspection but then fixed all of their errors and somehow received an "A." The workers are rude and it's hard to find a clean table.

Facts

Favorite Things To Do

Students' favorite things to do on campus are limited mostly to exercising and just hanging out. You can always find people gathered on the great lawn doing something, but there generally aren’t too many engaging activities on campus.

There is not too much to do on campus. Beyond exercising and the occasional special event, St. John’s does not have many things to engage students. However, this is set to change with the opening of the new UC in 2009.

Did You Know?

The 38,000-square-foot Taffner Field House was slated for official dedication on September 2005. The field house is part of a $23 million athletic and student recreation enhancement project that includes the Belson Stadium building, the new student fitness center, and various enhancements to Carnesecca Arena.

The Taffner Field House includes four full-size basketball courts (two for students, two for varsity basketball), academic support classrooms and study space for student-athletes, an office and meeting space for recreation and intramural sports, audio/visual rooms for all varsity athletic teams, locker rooms, new offices and meeting rooms, a weight training room, and medical training rooms.
