Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Department of Public Safety’s primary role at St. John’s University is to act as a deterrent to crime. Many of the Public Safety officers are former law enforcement officers. Their arrest authority is equivalent to that of any other citizen. Public Safety officers do have the right to detain an individual until the police arrive to make a formal arrest. St. John’s Department of Public Safety maintains frequent contact with the local police department (107th Precinct Queens, 120th Precinct Staten Island, and the 1st Precinct in Manhattan). The police come on campus at the request of Public Safety for the purpose of making an arrest. Public Safety’s job is to regularly patrol the campus, especially the dimly lit areas. Most students would agree that public safety is always on the lookout and are very visible on campus. In areas where Public Safety may not be, there are distress towers that can be activated to call them to the area immediately.

The University is extremely secure, and Public Safety has done a great job of keeping the campus secure without being too intrusive. Security has become one of St. John’s top priorities, and it definitely shows. Although they can become caught up in minuscule events, Public Safety is one of the campus’ strong points.

Safety

The campus is relatively safe during the day but at night, it gets dangerous. The relative location of the school has something to do with it but there was an attack on campus. I never see any police or security walking around on campus during the day. They drive by in their cars but I feel safer with them walking around with us instead of trying to run us over.

Safe on Campus for the Most Part

The campus is relatively safe within the gates. After you leave the campus the nearby area is dangerous. St johns public safety officers do not patrol the immediate area outside the gates.

Safe

I have never felt unsafe. There is campus security everywhere and they do a good job of making sure everyone is safe.
