Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

St. John’s is located in the Jamaica Estates, which is a development designed as a residential park. The streets were laid out to fit the contours of the land and only detached, one-family houses with an attic and two stories were built. St. John’s University is lucky to be located within Jamaica Estates; it is a beautiful residential area. The noise level seems to be moderate, and the majority of necessities are in walking distance. It is a nice mixture of an abundance of homes, but at the same time, there are many stores that help to cater to the student’s needs.

On the campus itself, the atmosphere is calmer (except around lunch time); and there are two high schools present in the area, Jamaica and Bayside. This can add to the noise level in the morning and afternoon when they are getting in and out of school. Even though the campus isn’t in Manhattan, it’s hard to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Crowded buses and noisy neighbors (particularly high school kids) are to be expected. On the plus side, there are so many things to do that students will rarely have to think for long to come up with something to do on a weekend. It’s mostly a matter of outlook and motivation.

Average Queens

Although there is a lot to do if you're willing to take the bus or the subway, there is very little to do around St. John's within walking distance of the campus.

Queens to Manhattan

Queens is quiet and suburban, but it's a half hour from the excitement of Manhattan and all New York City has to offer. It's great to be able to be on campus and relax with no worries, knowing that to get to the most excitement you could ever want is just over a river.
