Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Some students find it easier to just commute by public transportation, but those that simply must drive should come early to find off-campus parking because it can become hectic on campus. Parking is reportedly a disaster for many students, especially for those that have afternoon classes. It is often suggested that the University build another parking lot, but that will probably come last in line when compared to other necessities, such as new dorms. Also, for students living on campus that want to drive, the pricing can be very steep, ranging from $500 to $800. Finding legal off-campus parking seems to be cheaper and less chaotic than the campus parking.

Having a car on campus isn’t that useful for noncommuters. New York City has a great public transportation system that can get you almost anywhere you want to go. And if students think parking is bad on campus, they should try parking in Manhattan. It can be literally impossible, unless you are willing to put your car in a garage at a very expensive rate. St. John’s does not seem interested in promoting more opportunities for student parking on campus, and there’s only so much space available in the surrounding area. Bottom line: If at all avoidable, don’t bring a car. Parking will drive you nuts.

Parking

If you don't have a 7:30am class or a late class you will never find on campus parking or parking right outside the gate . Even with a parking pass you still have to get there early

Parking?

The price for a parking permit is pretty reasonable: $100 a year. You could park in virtually any parking lot on campus except in the reserved ares. If you want a good spot, it's good to get to school early. I personally do not drive to school because the buses are pretty convenient. If I had the money to buy a car and afford to pay for gas/insurance, I would definitely take the car to school.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Residents must purchase a resident parking permit from Public Safety in order to park a car on campus. Only residents in their junior or senior years and law students are permitted to purchase residential parking stickers. Stickers are very limited, and are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Students should know that limited parking is available; parking is not guaranteed. Overnight guests who are parking with vehicles must obtain a temporary parking pass at the Public Safety office.
