Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average Ole is more likely to attend a choir concert than a football game. Some people love this fact, and some people hate it, but like it or not, it’s the truth. Varsity and intercollegiate sports are not paid much attention by the student body. Sure, big games against Carleton will see a decent number of seats filled, but your average game is sparsely attended. Even though the games are all played off campus, hockey seems to be the sport that students are most likely to get excited about.

Intramural sports, however, are huge—around 60 percent of students participate. You and your friends can form a ragtag team of misfits and maybe, just maybe, win the coveted “Intramural Champion” T-shirt. IMs include everything from kickball to volleyball to flag football, and competition is usually stiff but friendly. If lifestyle sports are more your speed, then you will probably enjoy the tremendous disc golf scene on campus. If you are just looking to keep active, you’ll be pleased to hear that Tostrud’s exercise facilities are never empty.

Athletics

There are many options in team sports as well as recreational. St. Olaf is a Division III school. All of the teams compete well. The athletic facilities are excellent. The coaches are all great role models and good at what they do.

Fun

As an athlete at St. Olaf your teammates are your best friends. If you come here expecting to see the stands filled with people screaming you will be disappointed. There are rarely students at many games except for homecoming and the worms (Carleton). You play D3 sports for the love of the game though not for the glory and to be in the spotlight. For a school our size we have reasonably nice facilities. Athletes have a bad reputation here because many of us do not meet the high standards that we would need to get in without our respective sports. With that said there still are athletes who excel in the classroom just be prepared for a lot of hard work and late nights. Overall, St. Olaf has some very good sports teams contrary to what others may say. Football, Hockey, and Baseball being the main ones. If you love your sport and are ready to put in a lot of work in the classroom and on the field YOU WILL HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE.

Good for a D3 School

though olaf is a D3 school, it still has a lively intramural sport scene. We have the regular sports like volleyball and basketball, but then innertube water polo and broomball as well. about 60% of our student body participates in an intramural sport, and in a competitive or non-competitive league.. we also have 27 varsity sports, and the school will provide transportation to get to away games.

School Spirit

Just as everyone’s a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, so is everyone a little bit Norwegian when they attend St. Olaf. Olaf’s heritage is the driving force of school spirit among students. It isn’t the kind of school where people paint their faces and tailgate for football games, but there is certainly a strong feeling of pride, spirit, and community among students and alumni.
