College Prowler Take

Because the school is almost exclusively residential, dorm life is central to the St. Olaf experience. Through all four years, students will maintain loyalty to their first-year dorm. Because each residence hall has its own distinct personality, the dorm you choose or are assigned to will probably say something about your personality. Ellingson suggests intellectualism and good study habits. Mohn suggests the beer-soaked jock lifestyle. Hoyme also points to partying, but in a cleaner way than Mohn. Because it is so tiny, Kildahl requires flexibility and affability. Kittelsby, because it is so far away from everything, indicates tenacity. Those generalizations are only slightly more reliable than horoscopes, but they are a fun part of campus lore.

Although all the dorms offer all the typical amenities and are well maintained and cleaned, your options for on-campus housing are terribly limited. Juniors and seniors usually take up the more interesting housing options in Rand and Ytterboe. These dorms offer suites for four to ten people that sometimes come with private bathrooms or a common area. Regrettably, there are no on-campus apartments. If you really want something different from dorms but still on-campus, you can opt to live in an honor or foreign-language house. Honor houses offer an almost frat/sorority house-like atmosphere, but you have to develop an ongoing service project in order to live in one, and they are still subject to the drinking rules.

Most people avoid Mohn unless they’re athletes. It has a reputation of being kind of dirty, and the rooms are strangely shaped. Most dorms are nice, though. Sophomores always try to live in Larson, but Rand is also really nice, it’s the dorm that has suite-style rooms. Mellby is the quiet dorm. Two floors in it are quiet floors, so if you want to make sure you study, that would be the place to go. The rooms seem nice, though.

Most people live in the dorms all four years, which is really nice because it keeps the students closely bonded. Ytterboe is a nice carpeted dorm with sinks in the rooms. There are also houses students can get into. If I were an incoming first-year student, I’d want to know not to request Mohn or Kittelsby for my dorm because it’s not as easy to meet other students, although the rooms are big.

The dorms are always immaculately clean. Most people enjoy whatever dorm they are in, but all have a different personality. Stay clear of Mohn, and unless you will be studying Friday night, Mellby is not the best. Thorson, Larson, and Ytterboe are always strong, but they are all upperclassman dorms.

Ytterboe was definitely my favorite place to live. It was great having all the seniors in such close distances.

Mohn’s kind of sketchy. Ellingson’s a great freshman dorm if you have any intellectual inclinations. Kildahl’s got a good sense of community, but the rooms are tiny.
