Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Officially speaking, St. Olaf is a dry campus, which means that you cannot have alcohol, even if you are 21. The only places you’re supposed to find alcohol, therefore, are at Communion and in the cafeteria’s beer-cheese soup. Of course, once you’re off campus, you can do whatever you like. On campus, however, the rule is taken fairly seriously. Does this mean that drinking never happens on campus? Of course not. A quick look through the recycling bins of Olaf’s residence halls provides more than enough evidence to prove that the campus is not nearly as dry as it’s intended to be.
Almost everyone seems to believe that the role of the dry campus policy is not to eliminate drinking on campus but only to control it. The basically agreed upon principle is that students are free to drink on campus as long as they are in a room and not being loud. If you stumble about the residence halls with a bottle of liquor, you’re going to get busted, and you will be punished. If you are drinking in your room at 3 a.m. and blasting your music, there is a good chance that one of the student residence life employees on duty will get complaints and have to bust you. In the end, your chances of getting caught depend on who is on duty that night and how tolerable your neighbors are of noise. If you are looking for a party school, you will curse the drinking policy until your dying day. If alcohol’s not your thing, the policy won’t matter at all to you.

Dry Campus

The campus is not crazy about this rule, but will definitely follow it and punish you. Most everyone is reasonable, and second chances are very common if you have a good record with someone who will 'fight in your corner for you.'

Parking, Not Drinking

In theory, St. Olaf is a "dry campus", but everyone knows that the public safety officers are most concerned about giving you parking tickets. You'll only get busted if you're being obnoxious.

Parking Is Really Enforced

Be careful of where you park, you will be ticketed. Also, "pub-safe" aka public safety, is ALWAYS out and about, driving there cars around campus. If you're caught cheating punishments are very strict.
