Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because 92 percent of St. Olaf students own personal computers, finding one in a public lab is never a big problem. There is always at least one computer lab and printer in every dorm and multiple labs in most academic buildings. The only time finding a computer becomes a problem is during finals, when everyone is finishing up papers. If you can, bring a laptop. Most of the people you’ll see using campus computers actually have personal computers. If you do bring a laptop, make sure you get one with a wireless card. Most of the major buildings on campus are wireless, but the good people at IIT want to have a totally wireless campus.

The biggest complaint you’re likely to hear about technology at Olaf is that the Internet connection is terribly slow. Sure, there is a high speed connection, but there are also 2,700 people all using it at the same time. If you are used to a broadband connection at your house, then you may find streaming video and audio on campus painfully slow by comparison, but it works for everyday web browsing.

Labs

The labs at St. Olaf are anything but amazing. Sure they have the nice Mac flat screens, but the labs are only ten computers tops. Nobody uses the labs either, everyone has a laptop you need to keep up with the hectic coursework.

So Convenient!

Computer labs are located in every dorm, and all of the academic buildings. The computers are fairly fast, but log in can take a few seconds sometimes. There are printers all over campus, and you can easily print from your laptop connected to the extensive wifi network, so you are never far from that essay you totally forgot to print before leaving your dorm room! Most people have lap tops, but you can easily get by without one.
