Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most Olaf students are not into drugs, and this is even truer if we’re talking about drugs more serious than marijuana. However, if you are into drugs, you’ll be able to find friends on campus who feel the same way, and you’ll be able to find drugs, too. The drug scene on campus is not an obvious presence. Some students don’t even know it exists, but it does, and finding out how to be a part of it is not difficult. The American College Health Association National College Health Assessment for St. Olaf reports that only 10.6 percent of students surveyed reported using marijuana one month prior to the survey. That is actually 6 percent below the national average, but it’s still a very significant portion of the student population.

Even if you’ve never considered recreational drugs, there are plenty of totally legal substances on campus that are tempting in their own ways. Steroids are, as always, a concern for students seriously involved in athletics. Drugs like Ritalin and Adderall certainly are a temptation when a big term paper is due, and other prescription medications like painkillers and antidepressants can also be enticing. Overall, however, the drug scene is not a major part of life at St. Olaf unless you choose to become a committed affiliate.

Not Completely Nonexistant...

Drinking is definitely more common, but weed and even a few other drugs are findable if you know the right people (and if you are someone who wants to find them, you will most likely know the right people). It's not a big problem either way.

Administration Is Proactive in Education and Enforcement

There was an outside speaker during freshman orientation who spoke about her personal experiences of substance abuse and what it cost her. The campus is officially dry, so obviously wild parties are out. People who really want to party go to Carleton across town.

Drugs Few and Far in Between

There is not a big drug scene here. Drinking is far more popular, although it is a DRY campus which means you WILL get in trouble for drinking related incidences.
