College Prowler Take
St. Olaf is really big into having a residential campus, which is nice in a lot of ways. Because almost 95 percent of students live on campus all four years, the campus becomes very tightly knit, and everyone knows everyone else. Sure, living on campus can be a huge drag at times, but it is really nice to feel like you’re a member of a community rather than just another student at a school. However, because the campus is dry, the lure of off-campus living becomes especially enticing once you turn 21.
When Oles do move off campus, it is typically with a group of friends. This is mostly because the best options for off-campus housing close to campus are houses on or around St. Olaf Avenue, and houses are very expensive for just one person. If you’re looking for an apartment for just you, then you’ll probably end up somewhere on Division Street. Since this is basically right next to Carleton, it is typically those students who fill up most of Northfield’s apartments, but it’s not impossible for Oles to find cozy lodgings on the other side of the Cannon

I wouldn’t do it. You lose the opportunity to meet new people in your dorms. Besides, if you want to drink, you still can in the dorms. |

There are some nice apartments and lofts in Northfield, but it really is not worth living off campus. The best thing to do is live in an honors or language house. You are off campus in a house with friends, but it is still cleaned and taken care of by the college. |

Most Oles live on campus for their entire college career. Since mostly everyone does, it’s not really worth living off campus unless you really can’t stand communal living. |

There’s not a lot, but once you’re done experiencing dorm life, it’s definitely worth it. |

Almost the entire student body lives on campus all four years. You can live off campus, but there’s not a ton of off-campus housing available, and then there’s the pain of commuting. One thing you can look into are honor houses, which house groups of students off campus. They generally have some sort of service-oriented mission. |
