Transportation

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Northfield certainly isn’t a big town, and the walk down the Hill into town really isn’t unbearable except in the most extreme weather. Besides, most Oles enjoy a pleasant walk or bike ride down scenic St. Olaf Avenue when the campus starts to feel just a little too stifling. The campus shuttles are a great resource, but because they require a two-hour advance reservation, it can be a bit of a hassle. Most college students are very impulsive and don’t like to think too far ahead, so one of the most common ways to get off campus is just hitching a ride with a friend who has a car on campus.

When it comes to rides into the Cities, your only good option is driving yourself or riding with a friend. The bus into the Cities requires an annoying two-week advance reservation and, when you’re already spending a good chunk of change on a concert or shopping spree, you don’t want to spend an extra 10 bucks on an unreliable and inconvenient bus. The best idea anyone has ever had regarding student transportation is the movie bus. A cheap movie ticket plus a ride to the theater and back is definitely a good deal, but just make sure you don’t go see a longer movie because the bus doesn’t wait just for you.

Personal Cars

The only draw back to being in the middle of no where, at St. Olaf, is there isn't much to do off campus. Without a personal car, yours or borrowed, the options the school provides don't take you anywhere besides Target.

Transportation Is a Bit Difficult

We've got one bus that runs between Northfield and the college, going to the center of town, Target, and Cub Foods. The most helpful mode of transportation, especially for going out are the Northfield taxis. Although we're a pretty decent distance from town to walk, many people drive their cars to town. Also, we don't leave campus that often so transportation is not that big of an issue.

Transportation

One of the few downsides of the school. There's a local bus that runs a couple nights per week and is free and goes to the Target and a few other spots in-town but otherwise transportation is difficult (nonexistent) unless you have a car. Permits are hard to get and you have to live a certain number of miles away from school to get one, and the location of the parking lots is really far away. There is a ten-dollar (each way) bus that goes to the twin cities a couple times per week tho.
