Drugs don’t appear to be a major part of life at Stanford. The most popular substance that is used, and sometimes abused, is alcohol. The only drug that students mention with frequency is marijuana, which is probably more popular at Stanford than smoking cigarettes. Most Stanford students have never used or even witnessed others using anything harder than pot. Students are generally happy with the level of drug use (or, more appropriately, lack of drug use) on campus. Both the drinkers and pot smokers do their own thing and generally don’t cause problems for others. If you’re not into drugs, you won’t be subject to any real social pressure to try them.
Most students at Stanford drink, and probably 20–25 percent of students smoke pot to some extent, ranging from isolated experimentation to near-daily usage. The use of harder drugs is very limited. That’s not to say they’re entirely absent from campus, but certainly nothing to be concerned with. At a school where academics outweigh nearly every other scene, you’re not likely to find many students willing to compromise their studies for a quick fix of any kind.

From what I can tell, hard drug use is quite rare. Marijuana, however, is extremely common. Within the dorms, you’re not really at risk of arrest. Drinking is even more common. |

Drugs are really not that big...
Drugs are really not that big here; it’s kind of surprising that for a laid-back California school we don’t have a lot more people who smoke marijuana regularly. That is not to say that people here don’t do recreational drugs, but the drug culture is definitely not pronounced, and the use of hardcore drugs is rare. |

The only drugs that I see at all...
The only drugs that I see at all on campus are alcohol and marijuana, but those aren’t a big issue because it’s not like people isolate you if you do, or don’t, use them. |

I think that there’s a lot of weed on campus, but it’s not like you’ll be faced with it if you don’t want to be faced with it. It depends on who you hang with and stuff. Also, there’s no pressure on you to do something if you don’t want to. |
