The majority of students is unified in the opinion that off-campus housing is a bad idea. Universally, off-campus housing is considered too expensive and inconvenient (given the enormous and isolated campus). It’s also true that living off campus almost definitely requires a car. Since Stanford guarantees four years of on-campus housing, few are willing to accept the cost and trouble of living on their own.
However, despite all of the negative opinions about off-campus housing, it can be done. For students who are tired of the Stanford social scene, living off campus is the only way to get out of the “Stanford Camp” environment and into the real world. If you rent a house with several friends, the cost can be around $500 a month per student, which is comparable to what you would pay for a room on campus. If off-campus life seems like an attractive idea, it’s best to start looking early for both roommates and living spaces; both of these are limited around Stanford, so finding the means to move off campus can turn into a serious project.
