College Prowler Take
The majority of students are unified in the opinion that off-campus housing is a bad idea. It is universally considered too expensive and inconvenient (given the enormous and isolated campus). It’s also true that living off campus almost definitely requires a car. Since Stanford guarantees four years of on-campus housing, few are willing to accept the cost and trouble of living on their own.
Despite all the negative opinions about off-campus housing, however, it can be done. For students who are tired of the Stanford social scene, living off campus is the only way to get out of the “Stanford Camp” environment and more into the real world. If you split renting a house with several friends, rent could be around $500 a month, which is comparable to what you pay for a room on-campus. If off-campus life seems like an attractive idea, it’s best to start looking early for both roommates and living space; both of these are limited around Stanford, so finding the means to move off campus can turn into a serious project.

The campus is big, which means that commuting from an off-campus apartment to class can be a bit of a pain. Real estate is also exceedingly expensive in the Palo Alto area, so finding a room with a reasonable rent can be rather difficult. Some folks really seem to enjoy being away from campus for a bit, but overall, I’d recommend sticking with an on-campus residence. |

Don’t even think about moving off campus. You’ll miss a large part of the social scene, plus however many thousands you spend on your tiny Silicon Valley room. |

I never even considered it. It can be cheaper, but it’s a pain to bike onto campus, and you can’t really get a parking permit unless you live on campus or want to pay a lot of money. The Dead Houses are the best off-campus option for many because they’re close, they have DSL, and they have a co-op environment, where you cook for yourself and live with a group of people. |

Housing is very inconvenient, unless you are rich and have a car. Remember, the campus is large, and the nearest place is downtown Palo Alto. You figure it out. |
