Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

The verdict is in: most students are overwhelmingly happy with the Stanford experience. The combination of challenging academics, undergrad-oriented faculty, diverse students, beautiful weather, and a fairly social campus environment all combine to make for a great four years of college. Students, particularly those in engineering or sciences, might find the workload to be especially heavy at times, but most are capable and want to work hard in the first place. Perhaps the biggest challenge students face at Stanford is just dealing with the other students, who range from hippies to hyper-competitive pre-meds. It makes for an interesting environment, but also a stressful one. However, if you immerse yourself in it long enough, it will eventually start to feel reasonably normal.

Despite the problems that Stanford students find with the University, they overwhelmingly agree that Stanford is "their place," and can't imagine being anywhere else. It seems all the hype and the hefty price tag are well justified by the experiences that students can, and will, have here. If you're looking for a university with a big name, vibrant population, and a good balance of work and fun, Stanford University will not disappoint.

Stanford University Drug Safety was reviewed by BirdmanJay
B+

The university does an adequate job of policing extra-curricular drug use. Much of the activity centers around the undergraduate areas and off-campus housing, so campus policing is limited. A number of student organizations and resources exist however to provide support for those who need it.

Stanford University Campus Housing was reviewed by BirdmanJay

Housing is adequate for graduate students - the sizes of the rooms may be smaller than your typical off-campus apartment, but access to university resources makes up for the difference. Also, the smaller personal space is countered by larger communal space and a larger community of fellow students, which encourages you to socialize more.

You see all types of people at this college, mostly because it's so diverse. It's really cool to meet people from all over the world here, lots of international students. There's also a large number of jocks (because it's a big sports campus here), partiers, some people that basically live in the library, and everything in between. Relationship-wise, they say there are either casual hookups or long term relationships. I'd say that's fairly accurate, but that's not true for everyone. You will find a little of everything here, it's pretty easy to find a niche.

Stanford University Off-Campus Dining was reviewed by danniddr

Stanford has a number of nice places to go off campus to eat, the only question is finding it. Definitely ask around for good places to eat, or maybe use Yelp. There's some really nice places in downtown Palo Alto, I suggest the Cheesecake Factory and the Darbar Indian Restaurant. Note, though, that most of the places are pretty expensive, but that's what you should expect in Palo Alto.

Stanford is in what is known as the "Stanford bubble." It's beautiful on campus, and there are a number of activities and clubs that a person can participate in. Friday and Saturday nights you can definitely find some parties either at the frat houses or in some of the dorms. Sometimes, though, it gets kind of monotonous, and some people feel like they just wanna go out into the city of Palo Alto and do something new. Luckily, the Marguerite bus system is free and will take you to a number of places off campus, including to the Caltrain station, to downtown Palo Alto, and more! Lots of opportunities for something to do!
