Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity on a small campus is, to say the least, always going to be a problem. Specific races, religions, or orientations may find it lonely on Stetson’s campus. The majority of students are Caucasian Christians. This might be due to the University’s past Baptist affiliation and expensive price tag to attend here. But, this does not mean that minorities aren’t welcome. On the contrary, they are welcomed and needed. On campus, there are clubs that represent most creeds, races, and orientations. These clubs are very welcoming. There are activities hosted by the organizations that celebrate differences, and Stetson is happy to be the sponsor. These organizations are also very inclusive and allow anyone be a part of the activities they are holding. The main thing is to find causes that you support and join that organization. To join, it can be as simple as adding your e-mail address to a mailing list.

They Really Are Trying

There's a lot of different groups of people at Stetson, we have tons of exchange students and the school tries to encourage diversity as well as things like tolerance on a daily bases. It's still a mostly white school, but it's really trying to change and open it's self up. there's a couple clubs that try to help with this, like kaleidoscope and such, but there's still some students that refuse to change which there always will be no matter how hard you try to get rid of it. But it is a small percentage.

The Reason Why I Love Stetson!

My first impression of Stetson's diversity was really negative, and I was afraid that there wouldn't be much diversity of any kind. Boy was I mistaken! I'm a student org junkie, and we have an org for everything and everyone. Yeah, there are a lot of white students at Stetson but there are more ways to be diverse than race. We have many religions represented, tons of sexual diversity, and many students from other cultures. The subject of Stetson's Values Day this year was religious diversity. One of the most active club on campus right now is the Kaleidoscope club (our Gay-Straight Alliance.) Last year, one of the most visible and active clubs was CSO (the Caribbean Student Organization). For more info on clubs, search for Stetson Orgsync in Google and view our clubs list.

Family Feeling for All

Stetson University is the #1 Private Universities in the State of Florida. As a transfer student who is not only a minority, but also an older student, I am pleased of the great diversity on campus compared to the past statistics. There are so many student organizations from religion to sexual orientation. Though there may still be a "few" students who are not supportive, majority of the student population is supportive and accepting of the diversity and challenges that come across our every day lives. From the administration to the employees, there is a great amount of cultural differences, ethnic backgrounds, but it is a "family" feeling on campus. I feel this is of great importance for someone who is a minority and older!!

Facts

Gay Pride

The gay community is small, but intimate, and features organizations like Kaleidoscope and OSAPE. The gay community has been quiet but is starting to move to a more active level due to past incidents on campus.

Political Activity

The political activity is a diverse and vibrant one on campus. By talking to the campus leaders of the College Democrats and College Republicans, one can tell that they are very passionate about their views. However, the main feel of campus politics is more conservative than liberal, and the faculty is more liberal than conservative, so there is a sense of balance.

Economic Status

Mainly students from wealthy families attend Stetson University due to the high tuition cost. However, there are those from less affluent families who do attend here.

Most Common Religions

The main religion on campus is Christianity. There is a sundry of clubs to choose from that incorporate the Christian lifestyle with a range of activities

Minority Clubs on Campus

There is an assortment of minority-driven clubs that sponsor most ethnic and religious backgrounds, but there are no religious- or ethnic-affiliated fraternities or sororities.
