Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Public Safety responds to any calls from students on campus. They have placed blue-light call boxes all over campus in case of an emergency. Beyond this, the campus and the town are relatively safe anyway. There are always going to be a few fights, a few alcohol poisonings, and other minor problems, but not anything that would stop a person from going to Stetson. Stetson University is so safe that even John Walsh of America’s Most Wanted let his kid go here. But all of this doesn’t mean that students should let their guards down, it just means that it’s safer than most universities. A good sign is how many students can be found walking around campus at night without any problems. On the other side of the safety issue is the University’s Health Services. It has a full staff of nurses, and one rather infrequently available doctor who takes appointments first and walk-ins second. There is no personnel on campus during the weekends or holidays. It is best to have a second local choice, just in case. An upside is that all students are covered by insurance provided by the University. Health Services also provides pamphlets on all sorts of health questions ranging from the physical to the mental.

A Little to Safe

I gave stetson a 'A' only because the "p-safety" is always on the prowl for giving people 70+ dollar parking tickets for being in the wrong parking place. They will give you one even if the "teachers" lot is mostly empty and the only parking place you can park in is full. Leave your car in the wrong place for more than 1 hour and you will get a ticket.

Safe Inside Stetson Community

I've never felt unsafe at Stetson even while walking alone at night--which only happened once & it was because I was heavily intoxicated. However, I don't recommend doing that (walking alone at night), considering Stetson is an open campus and there are some locals that like to walk through Stetson. Outside of this little bubble, Deland is very poor and there's a lot of crime going on. Public Safety is available & I always had them in my phone ready to dial whenever I wanted a ride from my friend's dorm back to mine, vice versa. P-safe will NOT give rides in the middle of the day unless you're injured. I found this out one time when it was raining HEAVILY & of course I forgot my umbrella, had my laptop in my purse & was wearing the business clothes I would wear to my interview that evening. If I walked to my dorm I would be soaked by the time I went inside plus my laptop would be damaged. P-safe denied giving me a ride. Kinda stupid if you ask me.

Be careful carrying any type of firecrackers on campus because expulsion plus jail time could ultimately be the consequence of carrying an explosive.
