Quick Stats

School Slang

  • The CUB: The Carlton Union Building, located through the main gates, houses the University bookstore and Commons dining area.
  • Fraternity Row: Located slightly off campus, Fraternity Row is right next to Rinker Field House, where the basketball games are played.
  • The Hat Rack: A popular dining choice located between the Commons and the post office, the Hat Rack is also a Wi-Fi spot. It’s also known as the Fat Rack.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • If it is at all possible, live off campus.
  • It may be wise to get as many classes as possible out of the way before coming to Stetson. If you can get most of your prerequisites done at a community college and they are accepted here, you will be better off.
  • Stay away from Smith and Gordis halls. Nemec is alright, but it’s tiny and out of the way. Conrad is very strict on visitation policies, so if you don’t like being told when and who you can see, don’t live there.
  • The student body and the faculty are the exact opposite of each other. The faculty is very liberal and the student body is very conservative. Don’t assume that they are the same.
Tips to Succeed
  • Do as much work as you can during the day. This way you aren’t spending your nights doing homework.
  • Know your professors beforehand. Try to find out which ones will mesh with your style. Face it, if your professor teaches a way you can’t comprehend, you won’t do well.
  • Show up to class. If you at least show up, you can pull off a C.
  • Study a little bit each day, then you don’t have to cram the night before. Cramming statistically doesn’t help you!
  • Take time to party. Everyone needs time to relax and unwind.
  • The less stress you have, the happier you will be here.

Always Something

When you arrive as a freshman, you arrive earlier than all other students on campus. You spend the first few days on campus with a focus group which is a group of about 15 to 20 freshmen guided by two returning students called focus leaders. These people let you come and ask any questions you may have. They will show you around to where your classes will be, explain the best parts of campus and give you all of the insight they know about classes, campus, professors, you name it. The focus days are also filled with ice breaker games and parties that the focus leaders throw you. They really want you to be comfortable and confident before you ever step into a classroom.

Once you have moved past that, there are still plenty of things to do. People attend the intramural sporting events that seem to go all year round. Every Friday night a group called Hatter Productions does a free movie in the Stetson room. There are plays and performances by our school of music as well.

Facts

Traditions : If you’re a freshman and you have a birthday during the school year, it is tradition to get thrown into the fountain. But beware, there is a $50 fine if you’re caught by a strict Public Safety officer.
Urban Legends
  • The ghost of a woman has been reported on the third story of Elizabeth Hall.
  • The Stetson family’s ghosts have been reported around Hulley Tower at night. No, it’s not a myth—the mausoleum that houses their bodies is in the base of the Hulley Tower.
