College Prowler Take
Off-campus housing isn’t all that bad. After researching, there are several areas that are great to choose from. The main thing to remember is location, location, location. The closer to campus, the better for obvious reasons like time and safety. The crime rate is also something to consider. In the area of Brandywine, the crime rate is higher than in Deland, and the area is not suitable for most college students. However, apartments located near Amelia Avenue and Stetson have a better reputation. Working off of reputation is looking at whether the apartment’s worth the price. Another major thing to keep in mind is where you’ll be able to do laundry.
There are some things to remember beyond the location. When renting a place outside of on-campus housing, the rent is not included in the tuition. This may come to a surprise to some students as it is assumed that the living nearby could be partially paid for in some way. At Stetson at least, it is not. The best way to pay for off-campus housing is to have roommates, a personal loan for living expenses and rent, or a job that can actually cover all of the expenses that may come around. Just remember to budget and keep within it.

Honestly, I prefer the on-campus housing. If you find the right dorm and have a roommate you mesh well with, it’s very beneficial. Yes, the dorms are a bit overpriced, but look at all you get with it: free washer and dryer use, free water, free air conditioning and power, and free cable. You only have to make one major payment, and you don’t have to worry about monthly payments. |

I like how a lot of the off-campus housing that students can rent is near the campus. The best thing to do is to check the place out and make sure it’s something you wish to move into. |

I don’t like how some of the apartments discriminate against full-time students. I understand that they want some security that they will get their money, but if I’m looking for an apartment, I’m not broke either. |

I think off-campus housing is great, but I think the school should sponsor some off-campus housing, so we could possibly get better off-campus prices. Also, if the school sponsored off-campus housing, it could be closer than some of the apartments around here. |

There are some places to go, and the rates vary. Depending on how your finances are, it can be more beneficial to live off campus. Not to mention, there is a lot more freedom when living off campus. |
