College Prowler Take

The ratio of males to females at Stony Brook is pretty evenly balanced, so competition for the opposite sex isn’t arduous as far as finding someone. The more challenging task is to find someone that is open to meeting others. Many of the students at Stony Brook can be standoffish, with the typical princesses and jocks that wander the social scene. The other difficulty is the way cliques form, and seem to be impenetrable at times. Most of the student body is more concerned with day-to-day life, and doesn’t focus on the way they look. Therefore, the amount of model types around campus is far from abundant. Of course, they are there, and there are nice ones, but one must really be on the lookout for hidden intentions.

Stony Brook also has a large commuter population, and so half of the University’s students leave at the end of the day, putting an end to a lot of the search in that way. Much of the resident population also lives on Long Island and leaves for the weekends to hang out with friends. This dampers the chances even further. Going to class is generally the best way to find a partner, because, no matter what, that is why everyone is here. Don’t be left with the wrong impression, though. Promiscuity is here, and there have been some shocking stories about what can happen in the library or the Javits Lecture Center at odd hours.

The guys at SBU are not ready for commitment. They are immature. The freshman girls are easily manipulated into doing things with upperclassmen.

Facts

Birth Control Available?

Yes - The Infirmary has a gynecology clinic that makes contraceptives available. While the campus cannot afford to give out free condoms, the Condom Access Program allows any Residence Hall Legislature or student group to purchase condoms in bulk at cost, (approximately 25 cents each). They are then made available to students at cost. For more information, call 632-9338.

Social Scene

The social scene, as with most everything at Stony Brook, varies greatly depending on who you are, where you go, and who you are with. There are many people on each side of the spectrum; there are people who do nothing but study in their rooms during the week and go home on the weekends and people who go out and party every night. But the majority of Stony Brook students fall somewhere in between. Thursday nights are the party nights, and there are plenty of things to do, from clubs and bars to frat parties and dorm parties. Many times, people with the same interests and backgrounds tend to hang out together, like those involved with Greek life or athletics. However, there are no real social boundaries at Stony Brook, so don’t let any of the common misconceptions fool you.

Hookups or Relationships?

Stony Brook is full of students on the prowl. While the dating scene is okay, there seem to be mostly random hookups, and lots of them. Of course, there are some serious relationships, but students here are always on the go, and always busy and involved in one thing or another, which doesn't allow for the time commitment of a serious relationship.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Depending on what you’re looking for, a hookup or a relationship, there are a few good places to meet members of the opposite sex. If you’re just looking for a good time, there are plenty of parties to go to, and the clubs and bars around school are full of single, local people. Relationship wise, definitely getting involved in a club or activity will help you meet people who have common interests. Talking to people in your classes or getting a job somewhere on campus are also good ways to meet new people and establish relationships.

Dress Code

Stony Brook is probably not known for its fashion sense. There is such a diverse atmosphere that really, anything goes. From casual to sophisticated, one can find pajamas and business suits inside the same lecture!
