College Prowler Take
Because of the immense diversity of SBU, food of every ethnic origin is available in the surrounding areas of Stony Brook, from exotic Thai and Indian restaurants to the good ‘ol American burger. Students love enjoying a thick, juicy steak at J&R’s, or just shooting the breeze at Applebee’s after class (indulging in the half-priced appetizers) when faced with the harsh reality of the food served in the dorms. Zorba the Greek offers the best gyros outside of Greece. The Cosmos Café and Dunkin Donuts are located right across the street from the North P Lot, and are great places to sit and relax for a while. If one ventures down into Port Jefferson, anything is possible, from exquisite fine dining, to the run of the mill fast food restaurant, especially along Route 25A.
Like most things in Stony Brook, a car is required to get to all of these good places, because they can be quite a trek. However, by car, it’s just a few short miles, and it’s totally worth it for all the delicious delicacies and range of restaurant choices.

Restaurants off campus are good,...
Restaurants off campus are good, because there is everything you want here. Applebee’s, J&R’s Steakhouse. Students should not be forced to eat off campus because the prices on campus are ridiculously high. At SUNY Binghamton, you can get a cheeseburger for like $2. At Stony Brook, it’s $4–$5. |

The Chinese restaurants are okay, but too far away. You really need a car to reach any of them. |

I’ve only been to Chili’s, Applebee’s, and Red Lobster. They are very good, and close by, but the buses don’t go there. |

There are good restaurants and bad ones. For example, the Chinese restaurants are generally bad in the neighborhood. The good ones, like Empire, are in driving distance, though they also deliver. Buffets are not bad. There are a few good steak houses around that are nice too. |

Did You Know?Long Island has some of the richest wineries in the world. The East End Forks combined have almost 50 vineyards and 14 full-time wineries, containing more than 1,400 acres of vineyards. Long Island produces as much as three million bottles of wine every year. Wine tasting has become a staple of Long Island’s tourism. Visitors can sample Chardonnay, Merlot, Blanc, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other varieties on these tours, which are open year-round. “The Big Duck,” located in Flanders, was built between1930 and 1931. It is a 20-foot tall high construction of a duck, originally used as a retail outlet selling Long Island duckling. Today, it remains standing as a souvenir stand. There are a few good restaurants located in or near the Smith Haven Mall, which is about five minutes from campus. There is a free bus on the weekends that takes students to the mall.
