Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The prevalent student opinion of professors and academics seems to be that "it all depends." While the majority of professors at Binghamton is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, others would rather not be bothered with their teaching duties. Because Binghamton is considered somewhat of a research university, certain professors have the reputation of putting student instruction on the backburner and paying more attention to personal work and research. How involved your teachers are hinges upon your efforts to talk to them about your concerns. Introducing yourself at the beginning of the semester, and visiting professors' office hours will be extremely beneficial to success in all academic endeavors. If you make the effort, you will find that most professors will be warm and open to anything you may need.

Binghamton's academics are highly regarded, and the faculty includes professors who are among the best in their respective fields. However, this does not always translate to a great classroom experience. There are many great professors lurking the halls of Binghamton, but finding one can be a life-changing hit or a disastrous miss.

Binghamton University's Academics

Binghamton is known was the "SUNY Ivy."

The professors are great, intelligent, helpful, and engaging. I love going to the class because the professors make it easy to learn. TA's are helpful and nice. The curriculum is both rigorous and applicable to the real world. The only issue I have with the school, is its process of class registration which is both disorganized at times and stressful.

Ivy League academics at state school price

Binghamton's academics rival that of our Ivy League counterparts. In fact, many of our professors are ivy league educated or continue to teach at ivies, most notably Cornell, due to it's close proximity to our campus.

Most of our students were either accepted to Ivy League schools and 1. Couldn't afford it, or 2. Didn't like the social aspect of the ivy; while others were Ivy hopefuls and simply didn't make the cut. It's not unusual to meet students here who were accepted to Cornell or Dartmouth, even Columbia, yet decided that Binghamton provided a similar academic experience and a much more affordable price.

As far as rankings go, I do feel that Binghamton doesn't get the recognition that it deserves. Academically, I believe we are on par or exceed that of other top-state schools, UVA, Chapel Hill and Penn State; the problem is that we lack the name recognition of the others.

I have not had a truly bad professor since being here for my 3 years. There have been professors who I may not have enjoyed, yet they were still brilliant and extremely helpful. Professors are always easily accessible and the best part is that the Dean's of the schools are as well. I enjoy the fact that I can walk into the office of the Dean of our School of Management and eat lunch or have a friendly conversation with him. Having a first name basis relationship with a Dean is something I find to be extremely unique about Binghamton.
