Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Binghamton is not what you would call a sports fanatical school. It has no football team, and the mascot is named Baxter the Bearcat, a relatively unknown mammal, that's actually called a binturong. Binghamton became a Division I school in the fall of 2001. The overall school spirit is a bit lacking, attendance to sporting events is on the lower end, and advertisement for these events is generally nonexistent. If you want to attend an event, all tickets for students are free. The attitude surrounding campus sporting events is pretty indifferent. If you want to go, the events are there, but don't go with the expectation of seeing anyone's face painted or crazy costumes worn in support of the Binghamton Bearcats.

The sports facilities are in really excellent condition and open for student use. The East Gym was recently entirely renovated, and a new gym has multipurpose rooms that hold dozens of free fitness classes that range anywhere from Zumba to kickboxing. The classes are free, but in order to gain access to the workout equipment, you must additionally purchase a fitness membership. There are dozens of different intramural sports teams at Binghamton. All of the intramural teams are open to any student who wants to join them. There's an enormous variety of intramural sports to choose from for any fitness level.

No School Spirit

I personally don't care about sports, but most people can see that BU has little to no school spirit. This is primarily a result of no football team - however, I prefer this to having screaming idiots storming about as a result of a win against a rival or whatever. There is a gym on campus and available athletic facilities.

No Big Sports

There isn't a big athletics scene. Many people are involved in different forms of club sports, but clubs sports like volleyball or field hockey can be competitive to join. Others like swimming don't require previous team memberships. The D1 sports aren't popular. There aren't big turn outs at soccer games and there is no football team.

Most Popular Sports

Men's golf and men's tennis were the first Bearcat teams to reach NCAA Division I tournaments. Other popular sports include men's basketball and soccer, especially now that basketball is also a Division I sport.

Most Overlooked Teams

The wrestling team and track and field teams are both nationally ranked.

School Spirit

Binghamton does not have a lot of school spirit. There is some respect for the sports teams because the school is Division I, but without a football team, the spirit will only grow so much. However, the campus really blossoms during the spring. When the snow melts and the sun comes out from hibernation, everyone’s spirits pick up, and students start feeling better about their school. And, of course, the seniors are all brimming with school spirit, especially during Spring Fling.

Getting Tickets

Events are free to students, and there are always seats available.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The nature preserve—miles of wooded and lakeside walking trails just minutes from the rest of campus.

Did You Know? At one point, Binghamton was nationally ranked as having one of the worst men's basketball teams in the country during the 2011-2012 season. The team didn't win a game until late February.
