Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

You can usually find an open computer at one of Binghamton’s many pods in the library and around campus, and the 24-hour computer labs make it possible to work straight through the night. In the labs, there is a wide selection of both Apple and PC computers for any preference. The only times during the year when it's difficult to find a computer is during finals. At this time, it's nearly impossible. Students unanimously agree, though, that can you afford it, having your own computer is the way to go. The convenience of a high-speed network, email, and gaming from the comfort of your own dorm room is just too good to pass up. When you bring your own computer, though, there is always the risk of it breaking. It's a terrifying feeling when, during finals, something is spilled or dropped on your computer, and everything that's due is wiped from the hard drive. These sort of accidents can be addresed at the on-campus Computer Repair Center. It's open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

When it is working, Binghamton’s Ethernet connection for personal computers is among the fastest available. Unfortunately, the connection has grown more unreliable in recent years, in part due to an increase in personal computers on campus and increased downloading. Despite this, most students would rather work from their own computer than brave the occasional crowds of the computer pods. Of course, if money is a problem and a personal computer is an impossibility, the pods are convenient and available to all.

Incredible

The university does great job of having both PC and Macs. There are computer labs in every residential community, as well as in the libraries, student unions and professional schools. Printing is always easy, even when the library gets crowded. It's nice that you don't always have to go to the library to get a computer. Wi-Fi is all across campus as well, so there's never a problem getting online.

PODS

There are a number of computer labs (typically referred to as PODS) located on the university campus. The largest lab is located in the Glenn G. Bartle library. It offers both Macs and PCs as options for students. Printing quota is included in tuition and students are able to add to their account should they run out of pages (though this is a rare occurrence). In addition to Bartle there are a number of other PODS on campus. There are labs in the Science Library, as well as four of the dorm communities (Hinman, Newing, Mountainview and College in the Woods). The availability of computers varies depending on time of day/year. They are typically scare midday and during the 3 weeks leading up to the end of the semester.

There's Always a Computer Free If You Look

If you need a computer, go to the library, and you will find one. This is especially helpful if you need to print something out on the way to class, because you will always be able to do it right away, and you will never be late.
