Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Binghamton weather can be best described in one word: unpredictable. It's not beyond the realm of possibility to see sun, rain, snow, hail, sleet, and more sun again all within the same day. The best way to be prepared for Binghamton weather is to be prepared for anything. Make sure to check the forecast before heading out and plan to still bring an umbrella along. It can start to rain at the drop of a hat and oftentimes in very extreme quantities. At the beginning of the fall 2011 semester, classes were canceled for a week due to two separate hurricane systems that sent rain into the area and caused record-setting flooding from the Susquehanna River. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, and there's been a huge effort from the students to rebuild and raise money for the victims of the flooding.

Like any place, Binghamton is susceptible to extreme and unpredictable weather, but with the bad, there also comes a lot of good. Autumn is absolutely the best and most beautiful season at Binghamton. The surrounding hills are filled with trees that turn from green into brilliant oranges, yellows, and reds. The warmness of summer hangs on long into October. Once the cool weather does arrive, it is crisp, and there's usually a nice ease into the more extreme chills of winter. Winter can be an oddball mix of blizzard-like conditions and 50-degree days in February. Winter is really the season where you should be prepared for any kind of weather, and there's always the possibility you won't see the sun for a very long time.

Snow and Rain

Students must bring a raincoat, rubber boots, winter coat and hat for the winters in Binghamton. The summers are nice, but the winters are long.

Learn to Appreciate the Sun

Sure, we don't see the sun a lot at Binghamton... but when we do, we usually get out of class early (if the professor is nice) and make the most of it! Very, very good weather if you're into winter sports.
