Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Stony Brook is definitely the kind of place where you really need to put in the effort to make friends and actively participate in the social scene. If you keep to yourself during your first semester, you may be wishing you were back home or even consider transferring. However, by the second semester when you start going out more, you will be much happier now. There are so many ways to meet people and get involved on campus, and that is really the trick to being happy. Even if your classes are really stressful, you can always work on your homework with classmates—something that definitely makes it less stressful. Finding a balance between academia and a social life is not hard to do, but it isn’t easy either. It is very easy to get lost in the shuffle sometimes. The campus is absolutely dead on the weekends, since most people live locally and go home. Stony Brook is widely known as a commuter school for that reason. Attending Stony Brook will hold true the cliché that college is what you make of it.

The classes themselves also vary. Some will overload you with work, and others will have you excited to learn. Even if you hear a certain class is an easy A, don’t take it unless you have some interest in the topic. It will come back to haunt you when it’s a week before your midterm and you realize you have to read seven chapters on a topic that doesn’t pique your curiosity. Overall, Stony Brook is great academically for everything, especially biology, chemistry, pre-med studies, psychology, and engineering. The social scene is not very active in comparison with most other colleges, but there is one, you just have to look for it.

Unique Opportunities at My School

As the number two largest school in the SUNY system, Stony Brook University provides unique opportunities and it benefits from its strength in Long Island, NY. For example, we have various scholarship opportunities in Long Island, such as DMALI Scholarship, which is tailored only for students in Long Island. As the most powerful univeristy in Long Island, students from this university will gain more chance to win the annual scholarship.

Besides, stony brook university students have a lot of working opportunities in the city if they cannot enter to the most distinguished universities like NYU, Columbia University, Therefore, SBU is a good option for those students cannot afford expensive tuition and fees and can go to city conveniently.

SBU has a lot of connections with entities and org. in Long Island, which provides many opportunities for students.

Plenty of Space

Parking on campus isn't a problem as long as you park in designated areas. There are plenty of lots to park on campus near dorms, the train station, and the South P lot before entering the main campus. Freshmen are not allowed to have cars on campus unless they work off campus and provide an affidavit. You need a permit to park during the weekdays from 7am to 7pm. On the off hours and the weekends, you don't need a permit.

It's Only as Good as You Make It

Stony Brook is a good school and a nice environment to live in, but it can get dull. The Long Island weather can make things gloomy often and the fact that most students go home on the weekends making the campus look like a ghost town doesn't help. Going to Stony can be an awesome and rewarding experience if you have a positive attitude and you get involved. There are plenty of clubs on campus and events every night to make life a little more interesting. If classes are getting in the way of that, or if the material has you overwhelmed (as it usually does for most students), there are tutoring centers and resources on campus to help you grasp the subject matter better. It's all up to you to make sure your experience doesn't suck.
