Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Stony Brook University’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium has created a lot of new excitement for our Division IA teams. The Seawolves play some the best schools, but they also lose most of the time. If our teams had a better reputation for winning, there would be a very large following. Events like Wolfstock, which is part of the Homecoming celebration, enjoy great popularity, but after the first loss of the season, momentum dwindles down rapidly. Students seem a bit jaded, and while many might follow how our teams do, not many get caught up in the excitement. For some, graduation day is the first time they set foot into the stadium.

Intramural sports are really where all the action is. IMs have an enormous popularity and a very large following in all the different varieties offered. Like academics, intramural sports can be competitive, as well. The athletic facilities available for IMs help to promote their popularity. Oddly enough, with all the success of intramural sports, IMs are not widely publicized, and these activities still remain pretty underground. The only people that seem to know about IM happenings are the other teammates. Intramural sports are a good way to let off steam, take a break to meet others, and make friends in a fun atmosphere.

It's There, but Barely

There are sports games throughout the school year but I don't know anyone who goes to more than two of them. Personally I haven't gone to any this year. The gyms are lacking in equipment and space though people manage to work out anyway. Overall the athletic scene could benefit from some more funding.

Getting Better

In the past, Stony Brook wasn't known for sports at all, but recently, the school has made changes. Stony Brook has revamped several of the sports programs and made the school more attractive to athletic students. We have recently made large improvements with our basketball and football teams and have entered divisions that we could not before. The sports will only continue to improve.

School Spirit

The unique thing about Stony Brook is that everyone is very excited about how much they feel USB sucks. Apathy is something everyone here can get behind and really rally around. Even with such a vapid atmosphere, there are boosters and a perhaps small segment that really are excited about going to school at USB. There are many good reasons why, but there are also small things that can frustrate students, and lead to such apathy. Every year, spirit does increase. Since the erection of the stadium, sports have become more of a focal point. Nowhere is it more evident than at Midnight Madness and Homecoming weekend, with Wolfstock. Students all take pride in the work they do, but with more of an alternative view of school spirit—it is more of an academic spirit, wherein grades are the pom poms of spirit.

Getting Tickets

It is always free for a Stony Brook student to go to a sporting event (with Stony Brook I.D.), except for lacrosse games. For anyone else, tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth at the stadium on the day of the event or in advance online at goseawolves.cstv.com.
