Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If there is no reason to, the University Police will basically stay away. Don’t antagonize or test the police, because the penalties just aren’t worth it. Students at SBU are trusted by the police not to get out of hand, and in this way, almost anything goes. Keeping the dorm room door closed is always a good idea, especially when partaking of alcohol and any other substances. Keeping the noise down is also important. If noise levels get so disruptive that other students complain, trouble may soon be on its way. Stay good friends with your RA, having them on your side is always good. Most RAs don’t really care what goes on as far as intoxication is concerned, but there are some who won’t stand for it.

On the other hand, the University Police are very stringent about parking. Parking tickets seem to be the livelihood of Stony Brook Parking Services. They add up after a while, and they are quite annoying. Beware if you are handicapped: the police do a horrific job of enforcing handicapped parking at night, and so all the disabled parking spots are usually taken by the lazy population of Stony Brook students.

Not Too Bad

Obviously do not purposely try to break the rules. But either way most staff and admin are reasonable people.

They Mean Business

Campus is patroled around the clock for safety purposes and if you're trying to get away with cheating on exams or work my advice would be don't even try it. The school is very strict against anyone who cheats and there are no exceptions given, it's a no tolerance policy.

Party but Be Respectful

I have heard of a few instances where RA's have interupted the jovial processions which normally accompany the completion of an important exam, but the line which outlines the tolerance of those which have been designated to enforce school policies in regards to such matters can be stretched quite thin as long as you dont partake in rowdy hooliganism that ignites their flame. If you live in the upper classmen apartments, then you can have a free-for-all virtually every night without any concern for being disciplined. But in order to earn the privldge to be a resident in these apartments, you have to qualify by way of academic merit. Hence, though ones rights are extended, the demographic is fairly studious and not abusive of their privledges.
