Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

On Thursday nights inside the dorms, it’s pretty much a given that there will be drinking, and maybe even smoking. Most of the newer buildings have advanced smoke alarms that can tell if someone is covering them in any way. If someone tries to prevent the alarms from detecting any smoking going on in a room, it will go off. However, in most of the older buildings (e.g. Roosevelt), you can pretty much get away with whatever you want—alarm covered or not. Catching a whiff of marijuana is definitely not uncommon during any day of the week. Spend just a little time inside the residence halls, and most people know about it.

It is generally alcohol and marijuana that students use, but there are cases of harder drugs, including LSD, mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. That’s not to say that there is any kind of pressure to indulge. Students do what they like, and drugs can easily be avoided. However, it is a pretty common sight to witness drunken stupidity at all hours of the night. Don’t let the noise get out of hand, or you will find a very pissed RA or University Police officer banging at your door, and the consequences can be harsh. Community service is no fun when there are finals to study for. As it turns out, caffeine is probably the most widely-used drug on campus, and Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts are very popular places around finals week, or any day of any week.

Not Bad for Drug Safety

For doing drugs, I think it mostly depends on the people who you hang out with. In my point of view of drug scene at Stony Brook University, it is not a terrible place for most students to hang out for doing drugs. The school itself provides so many other ways to students for relieving pressures; although most still feel stressful, the school would manage the drug scenes, such as not allowing to keep alcohol drinks in students' dorms.

Pretty Safe Place

Smoking runs rampant. Other than that, everyone just like to drink.

Drug Safety

I don't know how the drug scene on campus is since I don't partake in it. I do know that they do have strict policies pertaining to it and alcohol. They try to minimize the amount of alcohol an individual 21 and older can have which I think is a really good thing.
