Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At more than 50 years old, Stony Brook University is a relatively young university. However, it is one of the most up-and-coming educational institutions. Work is always being done to make the campus more beautiful and better able to handle the growing numbers of students. A wing was added to the Student Activity Center (SAC) that features a state-of-the art exercise facility, art gallery, student lounge, and other amenities. The Wang Center is also an art building with Asian restaurants that feature a world-class sushi restaurant, a theatre, and waterfalls— it’s just breathtaking.

The campus athletic facilities are immense. The Kenneth LaValle Stadium was erected to support the Seawolves football team’s rise to Division I. There are courts for every kind of sport. There is even an indoor track and an Olympic-sized pool. There are at least a dozen computing sites on campus that are all open at different times of the day, some open as late as 4 a.m. The Student Union is also a major hub on the campus, especially for campus residents, due to its proximity to the H-quad. Big name acts who have recently come to rock out in concert at Stony Brook inlcude Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday, and Kanye West.

Broad View from a Commuter

These statements should be taken with a grain of sand I suppose, only because this is my first semester here and I have litte experience with all the facilities. However, most buildings are in good condition, there is a decent amount of renovations going on currently, new housing, a hotel, a new student center and renovations on an entire building/lecture hall (spring 2012). The computer labs are often full, but that varies on times during the day and semester and the specific lab. The library is a great collection of information and tools that i often utilize, as well as several secluded areas for quite study. There are plenty of campus activities and i'm sure that there is a club for most things one could think of, if that is something you are interested in. Generally most people are committed to their work and you'll find a diverse community of students and teachers and professional staff that are quite helpful.

Its Getting There

Being a public university Stony Brook loves spending its money on athletics. There are a variety of gyms and half the campus is just fields for different sports. The gyms are very nicely distributed so its only a short walk to the gym from residences. The student center although not frequented by students (because its new) is available for use. Library is the best place to study but a bit outdated. With regards to the campus appearance, it's a beautiful place to be in during spring, fall and summer. It integrates with nature and we have a large number of foot paths. Finally with regards to campus activities its not the best place to be but they are working really hard to change that. Also fun does not knock on your door but you have to go looking for it.

Campus Life on the Weekends Is Boring.

The facilites and campus life at Stony Brook University is extremely boring. Many residents leave on the weekend leaving the campus empty. Campus activities are almost impossible because of this. Campus life during the week are really good. They offer lots of information about the clubs and programs, which take place on Campus.

Favorite Things To Do

No matter what your interest, there is something to occupy everyone at Stony Brook. Whether you’re looking to get involved with Greek life, an intramural sports team, take fitness classes in the SAC or Bartending classes in the Craft Center, there is something at Stony Brook for you to do.

On a day when your schedule is packed with classes or even after a long week of tests and papers, it’s nice to relax in Starbucks or grab a bite to eat with some friends at Wolfie’s Restaurant. When the weather is nice, it’s fun to toss around a football or just lounge on the Staller green (the big area of grass in front of the Staller Center). At night there are plenty of fitness classes and activities, from Jiu-Jitsu, to Yoga and over 200 clubs to get involved in. With a little bit of effort, you can find something to do at Stony Brook on any day or night of the week.
